  • Going back to the origins

Has that lost its luster? Are you tired of hearing about the characters' origins all the time, and want to get on with stories now?

As for me, I'd be thrilled if I never had to hear about Thomas and Martha Wayne, Jor-El and Lara or Abin Sur ever again.

Yes. Honestly, I think Man of Steel could have skipped the origins aspect of the character and been just fine. People know how Superman and Batman started, just leave it alone.

^ Exactly. That's why Tim Burton's Batman was so great. He was Batman through the whole damned movie!

And they actually did a flashback of his origin, which only took up like 5-10 minutes of the movie. So you can include their origin material without having to dedicate an entire movie to it.

Well, I wouldn't mind hearing about the origins of some of the characters that essentially have no origins now that everything has been changed with the DCnU.

In a movie, yes, I think that the first movie about a hero, even a well-known hero, needs to cover that ground, even if only in a minimal flashback. And not just the first movie EVER, but if you are starting fresh as well.

Not even that! They had Bruce's parents getting killed, but no training montage or any of that shit.

Well, for me Bruce's origin really IS the scene with his parents getting killed, along with the idea that that was what inspired him to become Batman. Unless you are making it the focus of the film, the training doesn't really need to be shown. It's kind of assumed. With Superman, the bare bones is the death of Krypton and his escape, and his being found and adopted by the Kents. You don't really need to show him growing up and developing his powers and stuff, unless that's the focus of the film. With Hal, it is Abin Sur passing on the ring and explaining what it means. We don't NEED to see Hal training with it, unless that's what you choose to focus the movie on.

So I'm fine with not feeling the need to make the first film with a hero be just about an extended telling of the origin, but I think the bare bones needs to be in there.

It's not just in movies. They keep going back to it in comics too. I mean, Batman's origin got retold so many times that the Joker ended up being Robin's father or some shit, and they did some stuff with Joe Chill too. If it's a lesser-known character, and you're actually going to improve it a bit without getting into unnecessary elaboration, then OK. But if you refocus on that stuff again and again with major characters, it just means that you can't come up with any story ideas.

I would agree that the comics don't need to keep going back to that well. However, at the present time I feel like there are a number of characters, due to the changes they have made in recent years, for whom the original origins no longer work very well. For some of those characters I wouldn't mind seeing what their origin is supposed to be now.

                      Yo.

I can understand the desire to not want it rehashed/talked about over & over in comics, but I know if *I* were to do a Superman movie I dont think I could walk away from having a schweet sequence that involves a baby in a rocket being launched from an exploding planet, travelling thru interstellar space between galaxies, and then crash landing @ its designated target..........

hell, thats the shit movies were MADE to visualize.

Oh god, I don't even want to know.

Depends how long it has been since the last film. My kids haven't seen that on screen in live action (well, my oldest has seen the Reeve Superman, but the younger ones haven't yet). I get the feeling that there are a lot of moviegoers out there that watch very few films for the first time more than, say, 5-10 years after they came out.

I could be wrong about that, of course. It just seems like I've run into several people that will rave about whatever has come out recently, but when you mention something from a few years back, they've never seen it.

and while Im not saying ya HAVE TO do it, I can certainly understand why atleast *that* sequence might be revisited.
