Should Disney buy DC Comics from Time Warner?

    Should Disney buy DC Comics from Time Warner?

    I assume that Disney would be the purchaser there, owning to Marvel's greater value.

    What do you folks think? I mean, as a business move for Disney. I'm not suggesting that DC's comics or television shows would improve under that arrangement, although its movies probably would.

    Of course Disney would realize many economies of scale by doing this. It could lay off most of DC's managers, operate everything out of the same HQ, print everything with the same presses, film all the movies and television shows with the same crews, and so on. If I were working for Disney, I'd take a hard look at it.

      It would be better for DC's line of movies, but the comics would suck every bit as bad as they do now. Marvel doesn't have their sh*t together any more than DC when it comes to their comic books.

        I recognize that. I think DC's comics might actually get worse under Marvel. But it might make business sense.

        Something else -- comics sales, box office receipts and television viewership would explode for at least several years, with the novelty of merging the two universes.

          Disney would have a better chance of buying WB/Time Warner altogether, than getting DC out of their hands.

            Maybe. There's no way of knowing unless you study the books. But Disney should look at doing it. Buying Time Warner itself might give them enough economies of scale to make doing that feasible too.

            I don't think that buying just DC Comics is infeasible though. All it would take to get that ball rolling is a flop movie or two. Dan DiDio said just a few weeks ago that the business of print comics is flirting with extinction. The obvious response to that is industry consolidation.

            Remember that Time Warner sold WCW to the WWE. Something like that could happen here.

              Well let me amend that to say that the purchase would be of DC Entertainment.

                (1) We don't need these entertainment conglomerates to get any bigger than they already are.
                (2) The healthy competition between DC and Marvel over the decades has helped keep the superhero genre alive.

                  You might be right about that. But if Disney thinks it can make more money with DC Entertainment than Time Warner is making, then from a corporate viewpoint, the rational move would be to make the purchase.

                    Disney has already ruined half my childhood. They can stay the *** away from DC Comics.

                    Funny story, back when the Superman rights came up around the time Smallville was first on the air... Joe Q tried to work with the people fighting for the rights of Superman and claimed Marvel would give them more money to produce the Smallville comic if they allowed it.

                    DC Comics are fine where they're at. Presently... they're doing BETTER than Marvel [at least as far as the superhero genre goes]. Just because Disney has made a few good superhero movies, that won't go on forever. I bet as soon as Robert Downey Jr is out of the picture it goes downhill FAST. Remember how good the first Mortal Kombat film was? Remember the second one that recast everyone but Liu Kang? Yeah... that one didn't do near as well...

                      Disney would have to make a calculation as to how much DC Entertainment is worth to Time Warner, and how much it would be worth to Disney. If it would be worth more to Disney, then Disney could offer a bit more for it than it's worth to Time Warner.

                      Which of course is what they did when they bought Star Wars for $4 billion.

                        DC buys people out, they don't sell out themselves. They need to do more stuff will all the unused Charlton, Fawcett, and Quality characters they've acquired.

                            At this point no. After BVS & Suicide Squad were released I would have said yes, but with Wonder Woman being a very good film & a smashing hit, I'm very interested to see how the likes of Aquaman will turn out.

                            That aside I'm not sure Disney is interested in DC, since they'd probably have to purchase them "bigly" from Warners, who likely aren't interested in giving up the DC brand at this point anyway.

                              I don't know how that's gonna go. DC might be feeling its oats now. But another Green Lantern-type fiasco might make Time Warner eager to unload it.
