I'm not saying just for the story, everything that went into it was amazing. DC worked extremely hard on it, and I don't blame them for milking the shit out of it.
I agree with most of it, though I think the tie-ins and all the money milking promotions are strikes against it.
What I did agree with though is the scale of the story, and the actual story that was told, and how it was a DCU spanning event. To me the strongest aspect of the story was the scale of the events, as the Blackest Night did feel like it was a threat against the entire universe.
The effects of GL related material on the DCU as a whole has brought mixed reactions from me. While it was awesome to see stories unfold in BN takes its toll on the DCU proper, it took away from some of the 'personal' feel many wanted from the story. Hal Jordan many times felt like a backdrop to the insane amount of scale and overall DCU effected shenanigans.
Character usage was again a mixed bag. In the beginning of the story I thought it was awesome that story was just as much about the Flash as it was GL. It was pretty fun to see them team up with Mera to find out what was going on. Then when deputies hit, it felt like the story and characters involved became extremely diluted.
All in all I think BN was a fun event, which did have some flaws. The build up in the first three issues was really fun, as Johns used patience in building up the invasion of the BL's. Then when it hit it's climax, I think Johns pushed on the accelerator a bit too fast, and then then by the end it felt a bit rushed. Still, BN has been one of the most entertaining reads of the past eight months, and I'd dare someone to try and find me as good a art as Reis' fantastic run.
Start looking at other comics on the rack. You're bound to find dozens.
Read through plenty, and I've yet to see one besides maybe some of the detailed Joe the Barbarian panels that match up against Reis' amazingly detailed and 'epic' panels.
To me, this event was over-promoted and it didn't live up to the billing.
The only story that took place was in issues 1 and 8. The whole thing just felt like filler.
Like Johnny said, the tie-ins were terrible (the ones I read anyway), and were nothing more than money-grabbing rubbish.
The marketing campaign was nothing nobody else does. Marvel markets their stuff all the time. DC should catch up.
I thought the execution was one of the biggest reasons it was such a letdown to me. Instead of keeping it in the GL mythos like it was billed for years, they decide to spread it across the whole DCU so that they can capitalize on all these dead characters that they can bring back.
Good article, but overall, I feel that BN did not live up to the hype.

The only tie-in worth spending time on was R.E.B.E.L.S., and that was because Bedard had the sense to tie-in the events of BN to what was already occurring in the series' actual storyline. Instead of just making something forced, and new for BN.
I really liked it, but it's not the greatest DC event ever.
It's ok to be a fan of GL, or GJ, or zombies in space, but it's not ok to glorify something just because you're a big fan.
