  • MAD RANT Vol. 1: Why I like Kyle with Natu

Now, I see Soranik and Kyle getting a little flak here on the site, and it has me a tad irritated.

My biggest problem is people calling Natu a slut. Bullshit.

People seem to think that just because they hooked up rather suddenly, Natu is a loose woman. Kyle and Soranik are coworkers, and have been for over a year and a half in DC time. This builds up sexual tension, and they hook up after a crystal hooked up to the COMBINED ESSENCE OF ALL LOVE FROM ALL SENTIENT BEINGS suggest that maybe, just maybe, it could be a good idea. Now I myself work in an office, and I see hook-ups like this all the damn time. (Albeit, you jsut have to replace the crystal with tea leaves and a fortuen cookie...)

Here's a lesson kids, sometimes when people hook up right away, doesn't make it a bad idea. It just proves that they are very comfortable sexually with each other, and show trust, hence why I mentioned OVER A YEAR WORKING TOGETHER PROTECTING THE UNIVERSE. Even if it might have only been occasionally in passing.

And we have only ever seen Natu WITH KYLE. And after reading a lot of Corps back issues, I get the feeling that Natu rarely dates.

What I LIKE about these two together? They're not needy.

Both are content to let the other solve their own problems, and don't really need the other to come in and save the day. (Okay, Kyle needed some help getting his ass pulled back from the otherside, but what superhero doesn't?)

And then there's the fact Kyle chose to be with Natu over Jade. (As much as I loved that relationship... it's not coming back.)

This isn't just some random pairing people. It's two lonely characters trying to find a little happiness.

So go and take the sand from your collective vaginas and make a castle.

I gotta agree with Mad on this one.

Kyle and Natu work. I've been enjoying the dynamic.

I like them together but sometimes the dialouge given to them makes their relationship fake, I dunno but it seems that natu is sticking around unlike the OTHERS

I hav enothing against comic characters bagging other women...quite frankly I think some of them simply don't do it enough.

I agree with what was said as well and Natu is more interesting than Donna given that she's the daughter of a major Villain as opposed to the daughter/charge of an established major hero.

I would hope that the relationship not only lasts, but that at some point a confrontation with Sinestro becomes a major issue in the relationship...perhaps leading so some kind of begrudged understading between the two.

                  Something like:

                  Kyle: Y-you saved me. Why?

Sinestro: If you're looking to re-ignite some lost spark of nobility in my being, do not waste your time Kyle Rayner. While I may forever question her motives, I must respect the wishes of my daughter, and no matter how much the thought revulses me, Korrugarian Principles dictate that so long as the two of are together, your well being is added to my list of obligations; thus, so long as it is within my power to act, you will meet with as little harm as possible.

Kyle: uh? Is this your way of giving me your blessing?

Sinestro: (turning away) Accept my words for what they are Rayner...but rest assured that should my daughters shed but a singel tear because of you, you will wish I had ended your life today.

                  ---

                  Or something cheesy like that!

I'm with Max too. I think both Kyle and Natu get a bad rep for a romance that was actually pretty well written and set up since the end of Sinestro Corps War. Considering Natu has to deal with Sinestro being her Dad and Kyle's past luck with his love life, I think it's fair to see them get a chance to be together.

                          Soooo...

I think Green Lantern is a pretty cool guy, eh overcomes graet fear and doesnt afraid of Sinestro.

Did anyone REALLY call Natu a slut? Go back on these forums, or hell, look at any post involving Jade, and somehow she will end up being called a slut if her relationship with Kyle is discussed and if her cheating is brought up. Then, back in 2008-ish on these boards, when it was more of a "Jade vs. Donna" fight in pairing battles, you see threads dedicating to hating Donna and calling HER a slut.

It's just a stupid word that people throw at any girl character they don't like that has shown to be slightly sexually active, Natu has not been a specific target of it. I think she got called "easy" in one thread for a joke in response to me questioning if Kyle's other girlfriends "rushed" into things.

And as far as I could tell, it was in jest, but it's still dumb to joke about that. Misogynist remarks thrown at Natu shouldn't be validated, whether she's dated a lot and is actually very sexually active and liberated, or whether she was practically a nun before she met Kyle.

That word wouldn't be acceptable to use even if Natu had tons of boyfriends before Kyle, in my opinion.

Not every relationship irl has a slow build up. Especially in more industrialized societies that value lovemarriages and passion more so than more collectivist societies do. A narrative rushing things can be bad when it comes to getting a reader attached to a pairing, but the actual quick pace of a relationship isn't something unrealistic, nor does it mean it's doomed to failure.

In the end, it's a fictional pairing. Now that Kyle is being written by Bedard, I doubt others will falsely attribute his previous lack of personality (in some of our eyes -- I realize many love him under Tomasi) to his relationship with Natu. I've discussed their relationship quite a bit with Bedard in these past weeks, as well as his previous relationships, and I think the guy knows what he's doing, and he wants to build them into something special.

Whether someone is invested in a pairing, approves of it, likes it or bleeds from the wrists every time it is mentioned, all of their initial reactions are informed by emotional projection, personal experiences, cultural scripts on romance, societal mores, embedded ideas and a unique set of preferences and taste. It doesn't have to do with someone being wrong or right about a pairing for liking it or not liking it until they start throwing fallacies around about it, or misconceived notions spread like wildfire.

Despite my joking around, I find nothing unrealistic about Natu's and Kyle's hook-up (as if we live in a society where people take those kinds of things slow), i feel they are both mature adults and know what they're doing, and isolated from the context of storytelling and narrative (Which i find is flawed because all of the supposed tense plot points they tried to bring up only to drop them, the way jade has been used in the narrative, and the external commenting on them), they make just as much sense as Kyle's last three relationships. There is a tacit but profound difference in how someone views a narrative's portrayal of a relationship/character/event versus how someone views how this thing would go about in real life. That's why it's storytelling, and that is why even "realistic" things can be problematic in storytelling.

I don't think any of Kyle's relationships have been needy. The only times that type of dependent intensity came out were under extreme circumstances. I also think Natu and Kyle haven't had much of a chance to SHOW whether they are needy or not, given that we've mostly seen them in battle -- separated a majority of the time and on different missions, as per the Corps guidance and their assigned sectors, and the few "domestic" scenes we've seen of them have just been general "I believe in you/thanks i love you" stuff that we've seen in every comic relationship trying to be portrayed as positive and healthy. It still means it works, though, but I think Bedard is going to make them a lot more unique than they've already been.

I have a personal preference for Jade and Donna with Kyle. However, these are fake people in fakeland, and no one should be SERIOUS when they get upset over this kind of stuff. I like to joke around about how Natu and Kyle make me want to go Brightest Day on people and kill my entire family, but I'm not serious. I also don't generally agree with a majority of peoples opinions on what makes a character or pairing interesting and what doesn't, and again, that is personal tastes and preferences, I am used to having the unique special snowflake opinion (for example: I find Selina Kyle boring while I love Talia al Ghul. I'm so unique and special!).

I hope Natu and Kyle have a good run, and I think they will. Unless editorial yoinking, OOC writing, or ridiculous plot devices that simply can't be written around comes between them (just as it did with Jade/Kyle and Donna/Kyle), I don't see a reason why they shouldn't have a long-lasting relationship.

That being said, Donna and Jade are hotter than Natu, and Natu smells.
