I'm guessing that Altbacker and Semper used Secret Origins Vol. 3 #9 for inspiration. John was not only an former Marine in that version, but the GotU watched him & offered him the ring without John being a back-up.
Anyone making a John Stewart origin these days would likely incorporate his being a Marine. Likewise, anyone doing a John Stewart origin these days would likely not make him a reserve because they would probably want to go right into using him as a regularly active Lantern.Last edited by Star-Lantern; 05-16-2022, 06:15 AM.

John actually has some stuff of his own that could be mined if creators cared to look and make something of it, and if they were talented enough to expand on it in creative ways (spoiler: they're usually not). His past as a Darkstar, including his relationship with Merayn. HIs rivalry with Grayven, the New God who broke his back. His experience fighting Sector 3600, and his connection to Appa Ali Apsa.
It's funny because it isn't even that hard to research this. You can find his publication history on Comicvine, and these days, you can basically track all of the issues down and read them for free on the internet without looking too hard.
If someone paid me to make John Stewart a more worthwhile character in his own right, that's exactly what I would do (though I wouldn't need to because I'm already familiar with all the material). I would take a look at what is already there and expand upon it. There really isn't even a need to take Hal, Kyle, or whoever else's material.
In publishing, a frequently used tactic is that the front list is supposed to sell the back list. That basically means new stuff is supposed to sell old stuff. You make it so you keep your work accessible while making people want to go back and research the history of what they're reading about. That's how you build more passionate fans and deeper mythology.
I guess the problem with John is that, outside the Justice League toons, none of his stories are famous enough for many people to give them the time of day...so they don't.

Apparently they tweaked a lot of stuff so they wouldn't have to pay Ethan Van Sciver any money?

Those are some interesting points and would explain the seemingly unnecessary change of the Sinestro Corps symbol. Lyssa Drak is the only Sinestro Corps member aside from Sinestro that I recognized in the film. Or at least that I remember. I'm not sure who made her. I remember her debuting in an issue that Ivan Reis drew, but I suppose Van Sciver could have done the concept art. I'm not sure.
I actually saw the movie and posted a video review here.

There aren't any big spoilers except that Hal Jordan gets terribly drug through the mud. Hal Jordan fans will likely hate the movie. As a movie itself, I didn't find it all that good.
