Thought it was an okay issue, could have elaborated more, but it is what it is. DC is going to crap anyways, so I have no investment in the situation.

Pretty much ditto. I don't love this story, but I assume it's isolated at this point. The art was pretty good. John has a decent turn. Also kind of funny to see G'nort treated like a serious lantern (though briefly).

So there are two John Stewarts now? Am I understanding that correctly? So we can have one hanging out in the "Dark Sectors" dealing with Esak's mess, and still have one available to interact with the rest of the DCU? If so, that's weird, but I can't complain if it means his character doesn't just get shuffled off into obscurity.

^That is my understanding. I figure the same. This is something they could bring back (even years from now) if they want or ignore as they want.

Picked this up the other day.

Is it really a one-shot? Comic store thought it was a series. If it's a one-shot I might have to get the variant cover

This is the one-shot to tie up some of the loose ends from the end of issue 12, especially since Dark Crisis muddied the waters a little. Phillip Kennedy Johnson is picking up a GL book starring John, but it's my understanding now that it will just be a limited series.

I got the base & variant covers. There's also a 1:25 variant and a foil variant that I'm hoping to snag.

I used to do that at the height of GL’s popularity in the Johns era, but I realized I was spending too much money and space on something I just looked at and filed away. Not saying it’s not worth it for others, though. We each have to decide where the line is for us. Even the most die-hard GL fan can’t have everything anymore.

I resisted variant covers for years, but the collector in me eventually won. There's no doubt that they take extra space, and some of them cost a pretty penny. But I'm the only GL collector in my area, so when people are looking to unload a variant cover at my LCS, it often goes to me for a very reasonable price because there aren't other offers. Plus they're nice to have on hand for a creator to sign at comic-cons.

We had Jay Hero, who did one of the variant covers, on our most recent Emerald Echo. That's getting edited now, and it was really cool to hear about the process of making a cover for a major comic.

^Yep, that makes sense. I know it's weird to get an artist to sign a book if the cover they're signing is someone else's work.

Just read Emerald Knight. One out of four stars.

                          - spoilers ho!
                          .

                          .
                          .

Just blurbs, not a real review.
                          - two years after the mess of 2021?
                          - extremely weak "orbs" that must be held, instead of rings powered by Ascended John's godlike powers. Of course the GL Remnants (my name) are dissatisfied.
                          - still fighting the evil guy sacrificing entire races (by the planet) to resurrect the New Gods that disappeared.
                          - Hypertime mentioned.
                          - Hypertime clones?
                          - a better solution than the "orbs" is made by John, but still - no rings!
                          - no mention of Earth, the other superheroes, or other GLs outside the Remnants. No Hal Jordan, etc.
                          - not a satisfying ending, even for a one-shot

Ugh. At least the artwork was decent throughout. Personalities were just barely touched upon, even by Kilowog. It's all John, John, John.

Chuck it to an alternate universe, quick.

The God of Nostalgia thing definitely felt like potshots at the crowd that hasn't been happy with recent GL (and I do get, as the podcast notes, that some of these critics have gone too far and too personal).

I had not even thought of that!

But these leftist liberal Communist art majors who get into major manufacturer comic book lines "just" to change decades-only characters to the "new, hip" propaganda of the day - what kind of reaction were they expecting, approval and enthusiasm? At the same time, these woke culture-changers demand applause. So blowback is normal.

Koyos and Esak represent two ends of fandom, and not just Green Lantern. Koyos is the avatar of fans who think that everything old should be tossed for a specific, newer version of some media. In Green Lantern terms, I saw fans (almost always young ones) on Twitter saying things like Jo didn't need to be integrated into GL proper because there was no benefit to having her interact with "janky old Lanterns."

Esak can be seen across many toxic fandoms, like the Star Wars crowd who harbor literal hate for George Lucas because he continued to make movies, and allowed other media to be made, after the original trilogy. Someone could write a book about the plethora of toxic fandoms out there. In GL terms, there seems to be a meltdown from some segment of GL fans (almost always older ones) regardless of who writes the story, which characters are used, or whether it's a big cosmic story or a smaller story based around character development. There's nothing wrong with just enjoying a specific version of Green Lantern, but there's a vocal minority who cross lines that shouldn't be crossed.

So what Thorne had to say was much more elaborate than just the left vs right argument. That being said, the term "woke" originated within the African-American community, and when it's used as a blanket term for anything that someone doesn't like, it's often viewed as very offensive to black people. Use that knowledge as you may.
