    • and not accounting for taste because I know it is the tentpole title but how is Justice League still in the mid 80's? It's still on my pull list (so I am partially to blame) but it has been an absolute dud. It stays on the pull list out of force of habit and nothing else. Funny thing about Flash is I have heard some good reviews but not overwhelming ones to indicate why it is doing so well. Maybe it is LCBS owners inside scoop (or reader anticipation) that something essential or primal is going to happen there with the whole Watchmen thing.

      • As for GL's if you aren't into the Green Lantern mythos and are just a dude coming in to the comic book shop, I guess Green Lanterns is an easier sell. So shop owners keep it on hand. I am a long time Legion lover so I love the history and backstory however I always here that, that very thing is prohibitive to new readers getting engaged into the title. Which is why in the reboots, they simplify, dumb it down and tell the origin for the 20th time. Boring long time readers to tears all in the hopes of hooking new readers that aren't invested in the title and very unlikely to stay. I guess that is the eternal conundrum. How to draw in new readers while not losing your long time fans on long established properties. The easier fix is just create new properties so all the fans are new.

That's what I was trying to say last month. I think Green Lanterns sounds more flagship than Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps. I seem to remember a time where I read only one Bat title and I decided on Batman because I just assumed that was the main title.

yeah which you would think that the marketing wizards at DC would understand. While it doesn't make sense back in the 90's X-Men: Featuring Alpha Flight, would have sold better than just Alpha Flight. Superboy and the Legion remained Superboy and the Legion for dozens of issues when Superboy wasn't even in it for sales issues. Maybe HJ&tGLC would have been better served being Green Lantern Corps: featuring HJ. That being said it is not like it is a big difference in #'s. It might be more a function of store owners know what a Hal/Corps book will sell but they are being optimistic of the unknown of what a Jessica/Baz book will do. Time will tell should wait until both books are 12 issues in.

            • Yeah, I'm wondering whether the swapping of sales between their second October issues indicates a change in the pattern of the retailers.

              Only time will tell.

                  • WTF happened to Bryan Hitch?!? He used to be Ivan Reis level, and now his pages look terrible. I can't believe he's the guy who did Ultimates and Ultimates 2.

                      • The decent seems to be slowing down, it doesn't seem to just be happening with the Green Lantern books but some books seem to be immune to the effect. Rebirth seems to have put Flash on another level, whereas it is unclear if Rebirthing only gave the Lantern books a temporary spike and they are heading back to the previous level.

Still a decent of 2-3k copies ordered per issue. A very steady decline for two high profile books like these. They are both going to be in the 30k range in 1-2 months. Not good. Their peer title, The Flash, is still over 68k, which will likely be selling double in a few months.

                            • The Green Lantern titles have actually been holding their sales together better than I thought they would. I figured they would have been in the 30,000s by now. Still, when compared to other DC titles like Wonder Woman, Superman, and The Flash, it's pretty clear that something isn't quite right with the GL books.

Some things I would do (not that DC cares)...

Stop all emotional spectrum driven stories, and stop focusing on Emotional Spectrum characters. By now, it should be pretty clear that concept, in and of itself, isn't a particular draw. I attribute the success of those initial Emotional Spectrum stories to Geoff Johns, and not so much that particular concept, because it doesn't seem to excite a lot of readers when Johns isn't there to write about it.

I never would have printed Green Lanterns, and I don't see much worth in the Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz characters. Furthermore, I don't think the book has much to offer in terms of quality or originality. I would get rid of that entire book as well as those characters. Green Lantern does not need more protagonists. It needs less. It needs to focus on the characters that were already there, and actually do something interesting with them as characters instead of just putting them through emotional spectrum battles.

Personally, I believe one of the biggest detriments to Green Lantern right now is Geoff Johns. I think he is using his (rather massive) influence to cement and secure his concepts as much as possible, and, I'm sorry, but Green Lantern desperately needs to move on from his concepts and find something else to do.

Also, nothing personal against Venditti, but I'd get another writer. I think you will get only okay Green Lantern stories at best from him. I'm really surprised he has lasted as long as he has. Perhaps he's in good with the editors, or something.

But DC should really reevaluate this franchise and what to do with it. Won't happen, though, because I don't think Johns will allow any of his stuff to be junked/moved on from, especially when there's the possibility of another film on the horizon, and ESPECIALLY not when he's the one in charge of the direction of the films.

Well, Johns' run had dipped a lot before he left so I think people were getting tired of it even when he was on it.

Unfortunately, TBTB probably don't think like that. They probably assume the emotional spectrum is a given and will take the sales as a sign to cut down to one book.

I don't think he even has to. When Venditti, who was not a fan, started on GL he mentioned doing his research and he only ever talked about reading the Johns stuff. It seems like everyone now assumes that's where GL starts.

I'd be cool with a creative change soon. I haven't hated everything Venditti has done, but he hasn't made himself indispensible to GL imho.
