  • WonderCon 2012 (Anaheim???)

There have been several articles online about the 2012 WonderCon moving to Anaheim from San Francisco as the Moscone Center is set to go under renovations.

    http://www.comicsbeat.com/2011/07/27...ng-to-anaheim/

There’s been much chatter out there that WonderCon doesn’t have dates yet — and indeed construction on the Moscone Center in SF means that the con doesn’t yet have dates. Now, retailer Chuck Rozanski suggests, the big spring convention might be moving to Anaheim!

I will close today’s newsletter by passing on that Wondercon, which San Diego purchased several years ago, has reportedly just lost their annual dates in San Francisco’s Moscone Convention Center (due to remodeling?). The reported solution (confirmed separately by two senior officials of the convention) is that Wondercon will be held in Anaheim next year on a date yet to be announced. While this change will in some measure act to blunt Disney’s current competitive thrust against San Diego (not to mention seeking to block further expansion by WIZARDWORLD…), I will be very curious to see how this new Southern California convention will impact San Diego. With little warning massive revolutionary change is now at hand, and our world may never, ever, again be the same. I just hope that enough magic remains when the dust settles to keep making all of us cry sometimes with joy, when our most beloved of dreams come true in San Diego.
While this comes squarely under the heading of scuttlebutt, it should be remembered that Anaheim is one of the cities that vied aggressively for the big San Diego con when it was thinking of moving, so Comic-Con officials are very familiar with the offers made by that city’s facilities. The convention center is one of the biggest in the land, and while the area surrounding Disneyland isn’t as fun as downtown San Francisco, you could certainly host a lot of people there.

OTOH, it was suggested to us (by knowledgeable sources) that San Francisco officials are aware of the potential move and are not eager to lose the show. So….developing.

Update: Tom Spurgeon talks to David Glanzer who confirms the uncertainty, so to speak. WonderCon as yet has no venue and no dates and it migth be Anaheim, but SF is also in the mix and nothing is decided yet.

Asked why the process hadn’t been completed yet, Glanzer offered a very good excuse: all of the organization’s resources were at this point devoted to the CCI event in San Diego. “Because of Comic-Con we have not had the opportunity to look at this new proposal in terms of dates or even which facility is available. So the long answer to the short question is we are uncertain as to next years dates and location for WonderCon. But we are well aware that exhibitors need to plan ahead as far as possible and the decision made needs to be the best for them, and our attendees.”

If the WonderCon 2012 is in Anaheim, I probably won't be going.

That would be a bad idea. Instead, they should look to move to a convention center in a neighboring city like San Mateo or San Jose.

To add, Wizard World Anaheim is only a few weeks away from the dates of the WonderCon.

This only a temporary move right? Just as long as the Moscone convention center is done being remodeled.

From what I understand it's only a temporary move. However, if WonderCon is soldout in Anaheim the powers at be might reconsider. I don't ever recall WonderCon selling out in San Francisco.

WonderCon Moves to Anaheim for 2012

              http://collider.com/wondercon-2012-anaheim-move/112581/

This year I went to WonderCon for the first time and it was a good experience. It was like Comic-Con but laid-back, easy to move around, and an all-around fun time. It’s also a good venue for studios who want to give their big movies a boost without getting lost in the Comic-Con shuffle or if the flick comes out in between WonderCon and Comic-Con. Unfortunately, San Francisco residents who like to attend WonderCon have to miss a year unless they want to drive down to the Con’s temporary home of Anaheim, California. Comic-Con International has just sent out a press release announcing that due to renovations at the Moscone Center, the convention will be held March 16 – 18th at a yet-to-be-announced venue. This change will also move ReedPop’s C2E2 to a date TBA while Wizard World will postpone its April 2012 show.

But San Francisco folks shouldn’t be too disheartened. If you still really want to go, it’s a seven-hour drive away (not great, but not ridiculous) and WonderCon will presumably return to San Fran in 2013. Hit the jump for the full press release.

              Here’s the press release:
WonderCon to Be Held in Anaheim, CA, March 16-18, 2012

C2E2 and Wizard World to Accommodate Change

San Diego – WonderCon, part of Comic-Con International’s (CCI) family of conventions, today announced that the 2012 show will be held March 16-18, and Anaheim, California, will play host to the long-running comics and popular arts convention. San Francisco’s Moscone Center, WonderCon’s traditional venue, will undergo renovations in early 2012, leaving the 25-year-old show in the unenviable position of either being canceled or finding a new venue.

In a move to help alleviate an overcrowded calendar, ReedPop’s C2E2, which has been waiting to announce dates for its own show in March 2012, will now seek alternative dates while Wizard World has announced that it will postpone its April 2012 Anaheim show.

“It certainly was not our wish to move,” commented David Glanzer, director of marketing and public relations for the nonprofit event. “However, when faced with the prospect of canceling the show for a year or moving locations, after careful consideration we decided to keep WonderCon on the 2012 calendar at a venue that could accommodate our needs.”

“We fully understand the challenges of trying to secure dates at any venue, let alone one undergoing renovation,” said Lance Fensterman, Group Vice President of ReedPop. “In an effort to minimize the impact on exhibitors and attendees we are currently looking to shift C2E2 from our traditional March dates.”

Gareb Shamus, CEO of Wizard World offered a unique solution to offset any potential conflict for fans and exhibitors: “All of us who produce conventions know securing dates can often be a frustrating experience especially when you find yourself having to move to a new city.” Shamus continued, “Because of their long history, Wizard World has decided to accommodate WonderCon and postpone our April 2012 Anaheim show.”

“We appreciate the efforts of Lance and Gareb for going above and beyond in making the WonderCon transition more manageable,” said Glanzer.
