I watched the full documentary last night at a special screening with Mogan Spurlock. Wondering if anyone else is planning on seeing it.

It's coming to an independent theater here in the Bay Area. Morgan Spurlock is coming for a Q & A on Sunday. I was considering it, but Sunday's Easter! You can watch it right now on VOD on pretty much all your pay TV providers. Since I don't think I can make it on Sunday, I'm thinking I'll just watch it at home. It costs $6.99 from Dish Network. Kind of expensive but I guess that's cheaper than a movie ticket.
So without any spoilers, how was it? -
A couple of the characters had a good story, but I don't think they got the feeling of Con. Granted I couldn't imagine where to begin to capture the feeling of Comic Con. That being said I think that anyone who has been to Comic Con should see it.Comment

Ordered it on PPV/VOD last night. I was bummed it wasn't in HD but it looked OK. The movie/documentary was OK. However, you should be aware it's all about the people attending Comic Con and their stories and lives vs Comic Con the event. It offered a nice peek and insight into people and their passion for Comic Con and that whole popular arts arena. I felt they highlighted a few extremist but that's obviously going to get the most pop vs the mid-level attendee. I was even taken back by how dedicated and passionate some of these folks are. It's a worthy view that any one of us would find reasonably entertaining and enlightening.
It did not though, show the big lines, the camping out to get into certain panels, the challenge of getting tickets, etc. I was also a little disappointed with the "collector" they highlighted. He seemed pretty small time relatively speaking.
Anyways, much like when I watch Casino I get hyped and excited to go to Vegas, this definitely did the same to go to Comic Con. Can't Wait!!Last edited by UltimateFighter; 04-07-2012, 08:19 PM.Comment

Ordered this on VOD over the weekend. It was okay. I kept on pausing it whenever they had a crowd scene, line, or a shot of Hall H and tried to find myself or someone I know.
They didn't offer it in HD for your cable provider? I have Cox cable. I was able to get HD which was a buck more than SD.Originally posted by UltimateFighter View Post

DirecTv had the HD version of this flick and I selected that version to watch this film.
I don't recall if the film ever mentioned the year of the SDCC they were covering, but it was the 2010 SDCC. As pointed out by UltimateFighter above, this was about the average ComicCon attendee but rather those looking to stirke "gold" at SDCC, such as trying to land a job in the industry or getting that rare collectible. I thought the "collector" story was pretty lame in that all he was after was the Hasbro Galactus exclusive.
The "Designer" story was pretty good as it features a cosplayer and her friends taking video game characters and bringing them to real life. I like that it featured the rehersals and back stage prep before hitting the stage for the Masquerade Ball.
I enjoyed "The Survivor" story as well because if featured the owner of Mile High Comics. I remember seeing ads for this company in comic books since I was a kid and wasn't sure if it still existed. Dude has a huge warehouse of comics, about the size of a Home Depot.
"The Geek" Skip that hoped to land a job at SDCC story was like the first stage of America Idol. Dude is from a small town and has some talent and hopes to be discovered at the Con. I can't remember the other guy's name, but he definitely has the talent to work in the industry.
The guy that did the marriage proposal in Hall H during Kevin Smith's panel should have rethought it because his girlfriend was too clingy. That chick never wanted him to be out of her sight. He couldn't even go to the bathroom without her making a big deal out it. Freak!
As in the trailer, they did have a few celebrities and attendees talk about their experiences with SDCC, but real featured stories.

The "Survivor" was interesting too because just like you pointed out, I totally remember the ads on X-Men #1, Spiderman #361 or Punisher 1 and those comics from the boom time having Mile High Comics advertisements on them. (BTW Remember American Comics too? They also ran a bunch of adds). I remember I was jealous of my buddy who was able to get his parents to allow him to subscribe to them. They had a "All #1" subscription where they would ship him any #1 comic that came out. It's nice to see he/they are still in business but it was also kind of sad though to see how even the "largest comic book dealer" and one with so much history is so close to having to fold up.
The "Geek" was really not that geeky. I mean there are way more geeked out folks than him. I actually felt more bad and sad for him. It was more a page out of the Documentary "Hoop Dreams." They should have called him "Geek Dreams." He loves the popular arts arena but it's a dream and you can tell he will probably never make it.
The "Collector" was weak. That was the one comment I did have from my earlier post. I could have been a better "Collector" candidate than him. He wanted the Hasbro Galactus and he's happy? Sh*t, I remember in 2010 I bought 2 of those, like 8 Gi Joe Sgt Slaughters, 4 Transformer Blasters, a couple of the Star Wars exclusive (Darth Maul?), even bought a My Little Pony for good measure! That's only Hasbro! At Mattel, bought some Orko's, the Wonder Woman invisible jets, etc.
The married couple, that was extreme. Your summary said it best! I don't know, I can't quite decide if is it "cool" they met and then got engaged at Comic Con or just really off the charts "geeky." They actually should have been the "Geeks."
I will say my wife (non-geek, not a comic con fan) enjoyed the documentary and thought it was interesting and in a non-geeky way, humorous. She was fascinated by how crazy and extremely dedicated these people were but also found it funny and odd. Her final comment was she can't believe she is married to someone who manifests and shares some common bond with those folks.

Yes, the documentary has me looking forward to SDCC as it reminds me of all the events that go on at the convention; from panels, to cosplay, to meeting the celebrities. the writers and artists of the industry is all great.
However, this being a Morgan Spurlock documentary, I was expecting to see to provocative things about SDCC that I would have never guest; something buzz worthy. Ya know, the dark under belly of ComicCon. I wanted to see to tears of agony of not getting into the Convention and fits of rage of not getting a desired exclusive. The frustration of long lines everywhere. The penicl stabbing incident, which happened at the 2010 SDCC.
Anyway, is a great line I remember from the film:

"There is a smell at ComicCon and I'm tall enough to be over the odor line."

The collector seem to have a very easy time (relatively speaking) getting the Galactus Exclusive, as he simply ran from the entrance of the main floor to the Hasbro booth.
