alot of major fans believe he sold out. i personally dont believe that at all. the thing about stern is he was the guy to break down a barrier where you can just shoot the breeze on anything on the radio with or without fcc regulations. i mean despite what negative things people think of him he did and still is dominating talk radio and nobody can take that away. plus his movie private parts was very interesting because it shows you all the crap he went through in the radio buisness.

    • Tazz, you're the most challenged person who posts here. All of a sudden you'e defending Shatner? Make up your mind. Ninety-eight percent of working actors have to hold down another job that'll suddenly give them time off to go shoot a movie or a television show. The few who make it big financially are supposed to be grateful and not run over the others in their scenes. Almost all the big ones abide by this. Shatner is one of the very few who doesn't. In fact he's the only one I know of who doesn't. That's why people like James Doohan, George Takei, Nichelle Nichols and Walter Koenig couldn't stand him.

        • Tazz, I don't think Smasher meant his/her original statement as a slight to anybody on the board. At least, I didnt read it that way.

That doesn't bother me. I met Koenig at a con and he was a jerk then I shared that with another Trekkie and she told me she had heard the same from multiple Trekkies.

He was Jewish. Jewish law forbids embalming so burial legally has to be done in about 24 hours.

Koenig was a jerk? For real? Like, how was he a jerk- did he have a holier than thou attitude, or just didn't give a shit why he was there?

When I did my research last night, I found (and always knew) that he was born Jewish, but I wasn't aware of any deep practice on his part.

It's a bit complicated: he had a talk with Takei and Takei was talking about some of his roles before ST. He had talked about taking the part of a Japanese person who had unwittingly given info to the Japanese before Pearl Harbor. He carefully explained why he believed such roles could reinforce harmful stereotypes but he felt historical accuracy outweighed that. Koenig than disputes the fact with him and tells him it was a racist role and so forth. He was just cocky and seemed to think he knew more about Japanese-American social issues than Takei did. [Mind you, they are friends, GK was his best man at his wedding.]

Later, at the signing, he was the only one who refused to personalize (e.g., "To Josh...") photos unless you bought them from his table. Takei was super nice (probably in the top 3 nicest celebs I ever met) and talked to everyone who came to him, but Koenig was really dismissive and acted like a teen working at McDonald's, who just didn't want to be there. Their attitudes were almost completely the opposite: Takei acted like his fans were doing him a favor by waiting in line and getting his autograph; Koenig like he was doing the fans the favor.

Even all that I might pass off as a bad day, but like I said when I mentioned it to another Trekkie she said that some of her Trekkie friends had similar unpleasant experiences with him.

I agree, but I suspect this is one of those things that certain Jewish families just do no matter how devout they are themselves (a friend of the family was similarly not Orthodox but held to those kind of traditions). At any rate, it was the reason for the quickness. I read it somewhere.

                • Wow. That is unfortunate that he was like that. IIRC, I read in his bio that he had a son who committed suicide; reasons unknown. I imagine that affects ones life permanently.

                        • His nickname on Growing Pains was Boner. I used to watch that show in the 80's. Holy crap. I never knew that was Chekov's son.

                          Nerds?

                          His Death on Wiki:

                          Death

In February 2010, Koenig was reported missing by friends and family. He was last seen near a bakery in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada on February 14, and missed a scheduled flight back to the United States on February 16, which was the last day he used his cell phone or conducted any banking.[14] On February 25, 2010, a group of 11 of his friends and family members found his body hanging from a tree in Stanley Park in downtown Vancouver. Koenig's father told reporters that his son "took his own life".[15][16][17]

Indeed and I wouldn't be surprised if somebody online says he's the nicest guy in the world, it just wasn't my experience.

Nope. The character's name was Boner, which I assume would not pass on a family program today.

                              • I thought that Nimoy was the only good actor on TOS and that Koenig was the worst, so he really shouldn't have an attitude like that.

BTW, Koenig's character was modeled after Davy Jones of the Monkees, who was a big deal at that time.
