  • The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

I enjoyed this movie more than the first film and the ending left me wanting more.

I thought the action sequences were pretty amazing as well as the special effects. There was great chemistry between the characters and the film was well paced. Additionally, it was awesome to see Smaug in the flesh.

This film will play much better when the third film is complete and all three films watched together, as this is pretty much like reading the middle of the book and putting it down for a year before you read the conclusion.

    • An alright sequel. A little too frenetically paced for my tastes.

      • Triumph of the Spirit (1989)

"First come the SS, our lord and masters. Then comes our block health manager, Kyr. Then come the assistants, Otto and me. Then come the rats. Then come the lice... and then come you."

Follows one family as it's taken into Auschwitz and particularly Willem DeFoe's character who boxes for the Nazis' entertainment. Naturally, it's pretty depressing. It is very good, though.

        • 2 Guns- This was a fun ride, and Wahlberg and Denzel worked very well together. I could see a sequel in the future... and I saw Paula Patton's boobies!

Iron Man 3- I almost hated this after my initial viewing, but after watching it again, it wasn't that bad. It wasn't great by any stretch, but it wasn't bad... and the whole Manderin rouse is still stupid.

JL: Crisis on 2 Earths- I was in the mood to see this after reading the first couple of issues of Forever Evil. Unfortunately, it didn't get any better... and those accents for Ultraman and Johnny Quick didn't need to be used.

          • The To Do List

I thought this movie would be made in the tradition of Fast Times at Ridgemont High or America Pie, but it wasn't. This movie was so boring and not that funny at all.

I would not watch this movie again.

            • The Molly Maguires (1970)

"I have no coolness in me at all."

Richard Harris plays an undercover cop at an Irish-immigrant-worked coal mine in 1870s Pennsylvania, looking to bust the extreme actions of pro-labor group the Molly Maguires (Sean Connery plays their sort-of leader). Good stuff. The characters aren't one-dimensional.

              • Surprisingly I didn't think this was as bad as everyone said it was.

However it still wasn't a very good movie. Will Smith was phoning in it, Jaden Smith was an unconvincing lead, and the special effects were shitty as expected.

                    • Car Wash (1976)

"You probably noticed I ain't got nothing against you people. I ain't got nothing against you people. I ain't got nothing against any people. That's what I think we need, is more love in the world. I don't know about marriage, I don't know if I'd go that far. But, ah, I believe in the lunch counter thing. I think if a guy wants to be able to get something to eat, he oughta be able to get something to eat, you know."

Can't believe I missed this for so long. It was great. I wish more comedies were like this; sacrifice traditional plot and three-act structure for the humor. If they did this movie today they'd probably have to have some long plot about someone trying to buy the car wash and the guy trying to get the girl would take up 30 more minutes.

                          • The Hobbit (1977)

"Thorin is right. I do not understand war."

My god, this film brings back memories, and makes for a fantastic viewing (if only the DVD had more than "Play" as an option!).

The art and animation are dated, but not in a bad way. It ignores a lot of things (such as the dwarves being warriors and not just small people, or the Wood-elves not looking like frog people), but is a damn good watch for 77 minutes.

The music is actually pretty damn good, and the voice acting swell too. The narrator (at the opening) is also the voice of Gandolf (yeah, the name is misspelled on the case's back; didn't watch the credits this first time).

The character designs aren't bad. Bilbo resembles a fat little prince from some Middle Ages tapestry or some such, Gandalf looks like a wizard, Bard actually looks like you'd think he would, and Elrond has a crown of goddamn stars (his scene I forgot completely, so it was a real surprise).

There are some missteps with the designs, though. The dwarves are given a little creative liberty, such as extra-tall heads and big round noses. The goblins are like something from Where The Wild Things Are, big scaly frogs with horns. Oh, and the spiders have hideously ugly cat faces. Gollum is a freaky frog/lizard thing, though his look is actually not bad in some odd way.

One thing of note: when someone is killed, they are spun away. No, really, the screen blurs and spins or the character spins away like they're being sucked into a point in the far center of the environment. The only exception is the Eagles dropping the goblins/wolves during the Battle of Five Armies.

And speaking of the Eagles, the film does one thing Peter Jackson couldn't: give the reason why the Eagles rescue Gandalf when he's in need.

I'd really love to see a remake of this.

                            • The Border (1982)

                              "I can't afford a f***ing dream house! "

Nicholson plays a border cop from LA who moves to Texas and falls in with some agents who run Mexicans over. This turns out worse than he was hoping for. Pretty good stuff. Interesting that it was made when it was since it became such a vocal issue over the last decade or so.
