  • Dracula Untold

I didn't think this movie was all that bad. It was an interesting take on the character. Some things were cheesy but I really didn't have a problem with it.

    2.5/5

I thought it was a very different and original approach to the Dracula mythos. I saw it in a crappy format and still liked it, so I know I will enjoy it even more when I buy the DVD.

"You are stronger than us. But soon, I think they be stronger than you. When the dead walk, señores, we must stop the killing or lose the war."

            Insidious: Chapter Two (2013)

"You belong in the shadows now."

Watched this again because I'll be meeting Lin Shaye (who played psychic investigator Elise) at a horror movie convention this coming Saturday.

            • Fantastic Four (1994 Unreleased Film)

"Holy Freud, Batman! I think you're right!"

Camp is the name of the game in this Roger Corman take on Marvel's First Family. Lots of over the top romantic gestures, metal finger clacking, silly pose striking, and dialogue that actually makes me take Julian McMahon seriously, but even with these faults, it remains faithful to the story we came to know and love when we read the first five FF comics. One little oddity was this underground thief named "The Jeweler" who I think was an actual substitute for the Mole Man. It is too bad this gem never got full production value, or at least Sony could use this as a template for a "new and improved" FF film, but of course.....we get the "blogger".

The film is free to watch on YouTube.

                "You're going to die."

There were some good bits here, but I didn't like it overall; too many leaps in logic (how does the pack hunt both sides of the ravine?), unrealistic points (no hypothermia from the freezing water?!); and uncharacteristic wolf behavior.

The Last House on the Left (1972)

"People in China eat with sticks, and these freaks got 16 utensils for every pea on the plate."

I'll have to watch that again. It's been years. I remember having fun seeing it the first time.

                    • Katy Perry: Part of me- This was fun because I (believe it or not) really enjoy her music, which is all about partying and having a good time. I never knew about her relationship woes, but that's par for the course when you're a top-tier celebrity. I also didn't know about her religion and how strict her parents were. I think that was the most intersting aspect about this flick.

                        • The Ring (2002)

"I hate television. Gives me headaches."

For the first time I realized movie is a not particularly subtle comment on our culture's obsession with television. I can't remember if that's in the Japanese original (Ringu) or not.

                          Deepstar Six (1989)

"Sorry to piss on your picnic."

Watching this before meeting its director (the creator of Friday the 13th) tomorrow. I vaguely remember it. It's alright, but not the best of horror-beneath-the-sea flicks.

Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993)

                          • G.I. Joe: Retaliation

Cobra Commander: "Destro... you're out of the band."

Duke: "You didn't tell me about the karaoke machine."

I like to occasionally catch up with the Joes, as I did watch and like them to a lesser extent than the Transformers, so re-watching this was a no-brainer. From what I understand, Joe fans liked this film a lot more than The Rise of Cobra, and there are huge differences between the two. You've got a lot of hand to hand combat in Retaliation, along with a much cooler (and more historically grounded) Cobra Commander, the lols are on high, and ninjas. Just ninjas. The sequence in the Himalayan Mountains (I believe?) was beyond spectacular. When you actually start feeling your own fear of heights just by watching a film, that should tell you how good it is.

I personally liked the first as much as the second movie in the Joe franchise, and I hope they make more. In the first film, I think it was an attempt to totally re-imagine the Joes and Cobra (which didn't work out so well box-office-wise) and the second film had to bring the story around to a more origins-accurate portrayal, which was successfully achieved. Plus, you get the Rock, Bruce Willis, and Ray Park. It doesn't get much better than that.

I haven't seen this, but I like her music, too. I have her first two discs, but I don't think I've heard the last one. Any good?
Did you know she plays a mean guitar? I think that's awesome.

I couldn't decide on a film of my own, so I just wen and saw my dad and expected we would watch some TV like one of my previous visits. He decided otherwise. It really is a good film, damn good, but I don't have the fondness for it he does.
