  • I vaguely recall watching the Toxic Avengers cartoon series as a child.

      • Chinatown (1974)

"Course I'm respectable. I'm old. Politicians, ugly buildings, and whores all get respectable if they last long enough."

This time out, I noticed that Polanski makes several visual references to water before the big reveal. Kind of cool.

        Face/Off (1997)

"This nose. This hair. This ridiculous chin."

Hadn't seen this since it was new. I've come to the conclusion that Travolta makes a better Nic Cage than Nic Cage does.

          Choices.
Do either Toxic Avenger 2 or Class Of Nuke 'Em High.

          • I finally got my son to watch this with me. I've been trying to get him to try westerns, a genre he has always flat out refused to even try. I keep trying as he gets older hoping his tastes will change and it can be a new genre for us to enjoy together. He did end up liking this one so I'm hoping I can get him to do more. Fantastic film.

            • I love Unforgiven. Whenever I watch it, I think it's my favorite Western (though it's almost an anti-western), but then I watch Searchers, Butch Cassidy..., or Outlaw Josey Williams again and switch back to those.

But I have a good friend who also dislikes westerns and yet he likes that one.

I think I woke my aunt up last night with my laughter as I watched this. The first death scene with the nerd was hilarious, and the old school effect of his corpse was nicely done, especially for a low budget film of that era. The hallucinations, birth scene, monster scene, and that fat bastard who ran the chemical company were great, in addition to the total anarchy of things making any sense at all, which is the whip cream topping on this chemical cake. I didn't realize what I was missing in my youth by not actively watching Troma films!

So, I can see now that a lot of these flicks take place in Tromaville, and it makes me wonder if any of the separate film franchises crossed over. I mean, Toxie most definitely could have been a cameo in Nuke Em High. Guess I will have to keep watching to find out. Looking forward to that.

                • In Dreams (1999)

"My daddy is a dollar. I wrote it on a fence. My daddy is a dollar, not worth a hundred cents."

An okay psychic-mystery killer flick from Neil Jordan (not the best work of a director I otherwise admire).

Toxic Avenger 4 includes the title character of Sgt. Kabukiman, NYPD. I can't think of another, but I wouldn't be surprised. Hardore Tromaheads could probably name a bunch.

FYI: the founder of Troma and sometimes director, Lloyd Kaufman, appears in almost all Troma flicks. He also has very brief cameos in Rocky (homeless drunk) and Guardians of the Galaxy (second-story prisoner).

Yeah, I'm seeing his name a lot on Wikipedia. He was in GoTG? I will have to look for him next time I watch it. Thanks for the info.

This is another film I seriously need to watch. Again, I was fully aware of it in the 80's, just never got around to seeing it. Belial often graced the pages of my Fangoria issues.

He's a bit difficult to spot (though I recognized him the first time I saw GotG). When Star Lord is escorted into the prison, he's on the second level of prisoners, jeering him. He's next to the guy with the "favorite knife" (not the Rastafarian ).

I've heard movie makers say Kaufman is a total screen whore (in a nice way). He got the almost invisible part of the bum in Rocky for something like a train ticket and the promise he'd be in it. Once you know his face, you'll spot him in a lot of places. Troma gave a lot of young filmmakers their first credits, so there are a lot of people who feel a debt to him (like Roger Corman, but less mercenary).
