Maybe, but I kind of like the angle that you only get his thoughts through Dwayne. It's kind of like how Luke and C3PO interpret R2D2 or Han does for Chewie.

Does it change much in the sequels or is it always telepathic communication? (I don't mind spoilers).

Same rules (Belial never more than grunts for us), but there's parts of #3 where he gives Dwayne the silent treatment.

        • Hilariously Terrible.
I LOVE conspiracy theorists. They are like human versions of the cymbal clapping, dancing monkeys. No one takes them all that seriously and they get bored with them after about 10 minutes.

          • That might have done much better if it was a satire instead of actually trying to be serious horror.

            • Apparently it did not do horrendously. Rotten tomatoes gave it 61% which enough to be considered fresh it would seem. Audience have it at 43%. I get the underlying social commentary which I think many of the target demographic will miss but even then, no bueno.

                • Basket Case 2. (1990)

A much more laughable exercise in horror than the first. And it's humor you learn to appreciate. Even though I've never seen the B&W horror classic Freaks, I have a strange suspicion that "the family" in this movie is sending the same message about physical abnormalities banding the afflicted together in the cruel, laughing face of a non-accepting society. Plus the sex scene was hilarious. It's akin to watching a horrifying accident by the three stooges.

One thing I don't get, though- what's the purpose of Belial's eyes turning red?

                    (1) You have to see Freaks. IMHO, it's Browning's masterpiece (more so than even Dracula). At any rate, it's much more of a serious, quality work than BC2.

                    (2) Funny enough, I literally learned the answer to this last night. I was watching the commentary to BC1 (where Belial first has glowing eyes) and the director talked about that. Apparently, the special effects guy just came to him and said he could make the eyes glow and was really excited. The director didn't think it made sense but he didn't want to undo the guy's work so he made up his own explanation (not stated in the movie) that when Belial's telepathy is particularly intense his eyes glow.

Seems we are on the same wavelength. . I had a feeling the glowing eyes had to do with the whole telepathy thing, but I wasn't sure.

I was wondering if we should move our recently viewed horror movies to the general horror thread, even though this thread serves all genres?

Fine with me, but I don't have anything more on my mind about Basket Case at the moment.

I only stopped using the Horror thread because it seemed like it was just me posting for a long streak and a lot of times I don't say anything about the movie here.

I was near the end (when he started fighting) before I realized the baddie was THE Gordon Liu, but to be fair he's obscured for the first 80%+ of the movie.
