  • For his 50th anniversary yesterday, I did a Gamerathon (continuing today):

    MST3K: Gamera (1965/1991)

"The other students make fun of him. They think that he's strange.
    -Kids are perceptive that way."

Gamera: Guardian of the Universe (1995)

"Some day, I'll show you around a monster-free Tokyo."

    Super Monster Gamera (1980)

    "You're an evil space woman."

    MST3K: Gamera vs Zigra (1971/1991)

    "These films are weird."

    Gamera: The Brave (2006)

    "Toto is Toto."

    • Horror of Dracula (1958)

"You asked me for a meal, sir. As an innkeeper, it's my duty to serve you. I ask that you eat your meal and leave us in peace."

A "closer than others" adaptation of the novel, this stars Peter Cushing (apparently in his first role as Dr. Abraham van Helsing) against Christopher Lee (first time as Dracula). This is also one of the first color adaptations.

It isn't as close as it purports to be, but does have a number of details (while lacking others) that are in the book (Lucy luring children away to feed on them). The entire thing also seems to take place in Germany and not Transylvania/England, because everything has a German name. Johnathan Harker is also a vampire hunter fully aware of Dracula's identity, and poses as a library clerk for hire instead of being an actual real estate agent.

Um, Dr. Seward has a presence in the film. But he's useless.

So yeah, it's way off, but it's still a good film, and Castle Dracula is actually not too shabby looking. It's worth watching, especially for the final clash (Dracula's disintegration is pretty damn good).

      • /\ Hammer Films definitely went for the sex and violence approach vs. a worthy atmosphere as Universal did.

        • Public Enemy (1931)

"There's not only beer in that jug. There's beer and blood - blood of men!"

I love Horror (which was just called Dracula in England). Castle Dracula is beautiful there and the screen presence of Lee and Cushing (especially in opposition) is so powerful. I get why they starred together again and again.

None of the Hammer sequels measure up, though, they have their fun bits.

The only Dracula movie that's truly close to the novel is the 1977 BBC production and it's really close, which makes it slow cinematically.

          • /\ I thought Bram Stoker's Dracula (the one with Commissioner Gordon and Hannibal) was pretty faithful, no?

            • Get Low (2009)

"There are a whole lot of things you don't know. Like what a, ya know, a dog dreams. You can make up a story about him chasing rabbits. But you don't know if there's rabbits in there or not. And he can't tell you now, can he? People don't say what they mean, either, so you don't know anymore about them than you do about that dog's dream."

              (1) If you haven't read it, you need to do that.
              (2) The answer is yes and no. (a) Coppola's Dracula did some things most didn't: it included all three of Lucy's suitors without combining them. It included Harker and Renfield. They got right that Dracula walks in the day. They followed the basic plot from Transylvania to England and back. (b) But they did a lot not in the book, like how he was cursed, the bat creature, seducing Mina because she's some kind of reincarnation of his wife.

              • I decided to watch a Brad Bird "mini-marathon" yesterday.

                Started with The Incedibles...

                followed that with...

This was the "remastered" edition that had additional footage, including a brief flashback showing the Iron Giant's origins as a weapon of war. Having missed the Fathom Event for this, I was excited that it came to the local cheap theater this week. This was my inspiration for watching my "mini marathon".

Then, since I didn't have Tomorrowland or his Mission Impossible flick on hand, I finished up with...

(That's not to imply I think this was lesser than those other two movies. Not at all. I've never seen the MI film, and I consider Ratatouille superior to Tomorrowland. I just meant my lack of those films was the reason the minimarathon ENDED with this, rather than continuing with the rest of his films.)

                  The Great Escape (1963)

"If they cannot escape, then it is their sworn duty to cause the enemy to use an inordinate number of troops to guard them, and their sworn duty to harass the enemy to the best of their ability."

For whatever reason, gifs of this movie have been popping up quite a lot on tumblr in the past week. Maybe time to watch it again.
