  • 13 Ghosts (2001)

The only reason I watched this was because I thought it might have something to do with a book I just finished called The House of Lost Souls by H.G. Cottam (which I will most definitely be talking about in the book thread), and that story also contained 13 ghosts. Sadly, I was mistaken. And this movie was a bit boorish to me. The effects were cool, and the distinctiveness of each ghost was cool, but the acting was unenthusiastic, mundane claptrap. The only points I can give regarding that would be to F. Murray Abraham, who makes a decent villain.

If you haven't seen this, don't bother. Instead, read the book I thought this film was associated with.

    • Hitman (2007)

"Because that suitcase perfectly holds my Blaser Sniper Rifle, two .45s and a gag for irritating, talkative little girls like yourself. You want me to stop and get it out?
-I don't know; you think we have time for foreplay?"

      Tai Chi Hero (2013)

      "Why are you touching me?"

      Johnny Dangerously (1986)

"I'm not wearing a bra, Johnny.
-Yeah? Well that makes two of us."

      Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000)

"Control, vision, determination. These are the three fundamental components of the new generation race car driver. Speed is a byproduct. Going fast. But remember: The car is you, you are the car."

      Sword of the Assassin (2012)

      "Hurry up and suck!"

      Hannie Caulder (1971)

"Like the man said, there aren't any hard women, only soft men."

I remember renting it because I knew there was a chance to see Shannon Elizabeth boob

Not even that was worth it

        • The Magic Blade (1976)

          "Call Devil Grandma."

Fun Shaw Brothers flick in which the main guy's look was influenced by Eastwood's Man with No Name (which is ironic since that itself came from Kurosawa samurai movies).

          Hackers (1995)

          "Spandex: it's a privilege, not a right."

So much of this is dated (including the don't-care 90s nerd-cool attitude), but I still like it.

          Destroy All Monsters (1968)

"I really wasn't worried about you. I was more worried about Godzilla."

          Wings (1927)

"Hey, if youse guys need kissin' I'll kiss you - wit' a gun-butt!"

          Cradle 2 the Grace (2003)

          "I'm not Bruce."

          The Last Boy Scout (1991)

"As a matter of fact there is a problem. Apparently there are too many bullets in this gun."

          • Where Eagles Dare (1968)

Major John Smith: Nobody leaves here until I come back. Jock, save me some coffee.

Sgt. Jock MacPherson: It'll be cold by then.

Major John Smith: They say that's an advantage. You can't taste cold coffee.

An Allied general is being interrogated at a remote German castle, prompting a rescue mission against impossible odds. But the longer the mission goes on, the clearer it becomes that there is an enemy within.

My dad saw this back in theaters as a kid, and told me he had been confused during one of the critical talking scenes late in the film, where a lot of revelations and twists happen. He also forgot the last part of the ending.

We really enjoyed this. It had some great visuals and was fairly accurate in its wardrobe for the time (though IMDB notes incorrect coloring, markings, and names for some of the German forces). The story was also very solid and interesting, but that's a given since it's by Alistair MacLean. The acting from Burton, Eastwood, Ure, and the rest (including Ingrid Pitt, though she's practically a glorified cameo) are solid, and in fact it's incredibly amusing to see the Gestapo officer, Von Hapen, essentially making a fool of himself trying to maintain authority while the German Army commanders keep him in the dark.

The transfer quality to DVD is really good, even for standard def. I can only imagine what this might look like in HD (especially now that I'm awaiting the Blu-ray release of When Eight Bells Toll).

            Very highly recommend.

            • Flash Gordon: Deadly Ray from Mars (1938/1966)

"One more shot like that, they'll have to pick us up in a vacuum cleaner."

              Eyes of Texas (1948)

              "Love love love."

              The Arizona Kid (1939)

"There's one thing about following a skunk-it ain't hard to keep on his trail."

I've come to believe Gabby Hayes was never young. This is one of the earliest things I've seen him in and he still looks older than dirt.

              Billy the Kid Returns (1938)

"Born to the saddle am I."

                        • Ant-Man (2015)

"It was never just a heist!"

Holy hell, this film was great. The humor was pretty good, how Rudd's Scott Lang was just a guy trying to get on with his life after being released (the Baskin Robbins scene was fucking hilarious, how him and his boss almost get along). The cop fiance was exactly the kind of guy you love to hate (reminds me of that deep-voiced actor from Everyone Loves Ray).

Michael Douglas was himself a wonderful performance, especially seeing him both young and old, really reminds me of stuff I saw with him years ago. He really does a great job here, playing an older hero no longer capable of saving the world and burdened by the losses suffered while trying to.

I thought Darren Cross wasn't so bad a villain. He's the resentful apprentice, who once hero-worshiped a hero and mentor and became bitter when he realized he wasn't getting the full package. How he wants to outshine the old man and all. He really isn't a bad character, even if he is by-the-numbers.

I love Michael Pena. He is a magnificent actor.

Also, Thomas the Tank Engine. Gnarly.

                          Highly recommend.

                          • In theatres, it was Deadpool. It was good, but didn't live up to the hype. I liked the film, but was expecting a crazier and more annoying character. Dane Cook would've been a better choice as DP.

On laserdisc - not DVD, I watched Godzilla, the Matthew Broderick one. I liked it. Really I did. After not watching it for several years, I really enjoyed myself.

My view on that (and the view of a great many Godzilla fans) is that it is an alright and entertaining giant-monster movie, but that's not Godzilla, which is why he's called GiNO (Godzilla in Name Only) among G-Fans.
