My understanding of Kipling is that British colonialism is a recurring theme in a lot of what he wrote, so if it bleeds over (again) into this version of The Jungle Book, that's only expected.

Last live-action one they did, where Mowgli was an adult, focused very heavily on the British soldiers and how they were huge assholes to everyone.

Fair enough. I'd only ever seen the Disney animated feature, and I realized that after seeing this flick that I'd mostly viewed it through rose-colored glasses because the metaphor was not so heavy-handed, but it was still pretty damn obvious. Either way, I enjoyed the added layer of story and am interested to see if I can carry it over into the classic Disney flick.

Not that it isn't there, I'm sure, but I have a hard visualizing George Sanders as anything other than Batman '66 Mr. Freeze.

That's (former Mr. Universe) Steeve Reeves' premier in the role and arguably the strongest of the Italian-made Hercules movies, so definitely worth the watch (it's my second or third viewing). They mix sources though including a couple of his labors with the Argos (the main plot) oddly peppered with the Odyssey (including making Ulysses an Argonaut!) and just a dash of Samson. Reeves was a pretty good Hercules and the flick is free on Youtube.

Maybe too on-the-nose. Maybe too expensive or troublesome to get the rights (that song seems to have been released about the same time they were filming).

The Jerk (1979)

"I'm going to buy you a diamond so big, you'll puke."


Steve Martin stars as a man who was raised in the middle of nowhere, Mississippi. When he tells his mother he feels out of place, she admits he's adopted...which makes sense, because he's the only white guy in an all-black family.

So he goes off to St. Louis to try and find his calling, and along the way makes friends, enemies, and eventually hits the big time, striking it wildly rich. And then he loses everything.

I remember this as a kid, and my dad hasn't seen it in about the same length of time, so we decided to give it a shot and clear another film in the set he bought. I'd say it's worth it, but be prepared for some bizarre humor, a good bit of which is racially charged.
