                • The Maze Runner (2014)

"I belong to the Maze. We all do."

A group of amnesiac teenage boys survives in a fertile area in the middle of an enormous ancient maze. For several years they have tried to find a way out, but the arrival of a new youth and his insistence to escape changes everything.

This, just like The Hunger Games, is a young adult novel series adaptation. There's only so much any writer can actually do, since pretty much every story falls into the "it's a high school analogy" category, and while I don't see the parallels, I'm sure they're present. The characters therefore aren't very deep, a mixture of their age being so young and their minds being forcibly separated from their memories. The worst is the Gally, the rule-loving bastard control freak who hates Thomas because things change when he arrives.

I didn't find the "Grievers" to be anything special, mostly just gross and ugly cyborg beasties; the Others (or whatever they were called) in The Village were far scarier. I mostly wanted to see this for the maze itself and how it changes to keep the boys guessing and trapped. I wasn't disappointed, and the scale of everything is actually somewhat impressive, and there is an interesting reveal for the title character (Thomas) when he is told by a senior Runner what they really know.

I'll wait to form a deeper opinion on the saga after seeing the sequel, The Scorch Trials, but unless that one has some better hooks than the environment, and the changes between the novel and film are significant and frankly pointless (Thomas is made stupid for unnecessary plot reasons and the usual trash like that, along with other key elements being altered, not that I truly care).

                  • Catch Me If You Can (2002)

                    "I blew it didn't I? Why didn't I concur?"

Bad Ass 2: Bad Asses (2014)

                    "Damn Mexican MacGuyver."

                    Pieces (1983)

                    "Don't dwell on it."

                    Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993)

"This isn't a summer camp for dinosaur freaks like you."

Birth of the Living Dead (2013)

"You might make fun of the person who is afraid, but they might be right."

Part retrospective, part analysis; this was an okay documentary about Night of the Living Dead.

                    Alligator II: The Mutation (1991)

"I got six sticks of dynamite. If that don't do it, we're going to start calling that thing 'sir.'"

                    • I'm pretty sure those exact lines are in the original, when the street baseball player boy is describing the alligator's tail size to the cops. Did they recycle the dialog?

                        • I finally saw Batman vs. Superman. It wasn't great but I didn't feel like I'd totally wasted my money (since I saw it at the cheap theater for $4). Had some of the same problems as MoS to my mind, but less extreme versions (the Kent parents are still not the inspiration to Superman I think they should be, but that was a MINOR part of this film, and the fight scenes were kind of excessive, but they had sufficient variety that I didn't find myself checking my watch like I did during MoS's fight scenes. Superman is still totally uninspiring), and also had some of its own problems (I'm not sure I like murder Batman, some of the stuff inserted to setup future movies felt forced, and confusing, and Lex, while perhaps an interesting villain, didn't feel like Lex should in my mind, Superman was WAAAY to quick to just give up and start punching Batman around, given that he SAID he wanted to get his help, and I'm still not sure why, other than sheer insanity, Lex thought the Doomsday thing was a good idea, since he didn't SEEM to have it under any kind of control, and therefore seemed to have not way to stop it even if it succeeded in killing Superman), but it still managed to be entertaining.

                            • The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015)

                              "It's growing..."

Seemingly rescued from the Maze, the Gladers are brought to a high-security facility and promised to be sent to a safe zone and given free lives. But then they discover everyone who leaves is put through a fate worse than death, and barely make it out of another trap. On the run, they search for somewhere to stay.

This is both better and worse than the original. We see a much greater scope of WCKD's arsenal beyond the Maze and Grievers, more about their actual agenda and ruthlessness, and how people who don't work for WCKD live (hint: everything blows). On the flip side, we see how everyone is basically aping The Last of Us to the Nth degree, how WCKD is basically the Umbrella Corporation via the Resident Evil live-action films, and how you can really be screwed over by people you thought you knew who are blinded by company PR bullshit.

My dad thought this was better, but I feel like it's not quite so impressive (not that the first one was, but it was far from bad). The whole plague thing is very seriously right out of The Last of Us, right down to the hideous mutations (no Clickers or Bloaters, but they do become ghastly vegetation), as well as the wrecked cities (also a la Resident Evil films), and WCKD is as stock-standard an evil pharmaceutical gang as can be had. Oh, and the generally poor ideas, like leaving a gun behind when it would have been super-smart (and obvious) to get it back.

Not a poor sequel, but requires an even greater suspension of disbelief to view than its predecessor. I won't be bothering to watch a third entry if they do manage to crap one out.
