Well, truthfully, "very clever" was probably a stretch and I don't want to buy it or anything, but I still enjoyed it. Do you remember the main criticism? I could see charging it with being heavy handed or pretentious and maybe saying the main character is not all that relatable/likable, but it's not distasteful or amateurish. I'd characterize it as what I imagine Mad Men is about (never actually watched it) mashed with Super Size Me in a surreal Russian context.

    • I can't recall everything Chipman said, but it included:

      1) Protag being touted as a brilliant new marketing expert, but at no point does he really come across as especially smart; he barely passes as average

      2) The plot is explained in a ham-fisted way or some such, Micheal Caine ends up looking like a far less cultured actor

      3) The plot is basically a crappy fat-shaming-via-fat-is-beautiful evil marketing ploy

      4) Something about how obnoxious the visuals were

You can probably find his review online. I saw it on The Escapist site, where he has the staff account "MovieBob". Of course, this was a good while ago, so I don't know if he left and his submissions were all taken down.

"The ladder will get you to the roof. You're in from Liverpool, looking for work.
        -I don't have a Liverpool accent.
Then don't talk to anyone, Eddie."

        Superbad (2007)

"If only there was semen on everything, it would make our jobs easier.
        -Hell, yeah!
I often go to sleep and dream of waking up in a world where everything is covered in semen."

            • Unbound was a fairly good story and Brainiac was ten kinds of awesome.

"Everywhere he went he had a guitar with him."

I knew some, but not a lot about Hendrix, so this was pretty interesting (apparently originally part of the American Masters series).

                Harry Brown (2009)

"You failed to maintain your weapon, sir."

Yeah, John Noble gives a real weight to that role and it was almost spooky when he opens his eyes the first time.

I also like Supergirl insisting on punishing bullies.

"You can't ever tell your mother about this!"

It was either this or FvJ for tonight, but I felt like ushering in the summer blockbuster with a forerunner in the category. Still captivating as ever, and I kinda like the kids. My least favorite aspect of the film is actually the Indominus Rex itself; not that I was opposed to the idea of something new, I just wasn't crazy about the end result. Very glad to see her get her just deserts at the end.

And seriously, now that the whole damn park has been vacated, who is going to feed the Mosasaur?

                            • Labyrinth (1986)

                              "Ludo, call the rocks!"

A young girl is frustrated with her family, and in a fit wishes goblins would steal away her baby brother. When her wish is actually granted, she is forced to brave the infamous Labyrinth of the Goblin King Jareth, finding new friends and saving her family.

This is absolutely a film that would enamor itself into any child's early life, really shaping them. The visuals are truly stellar, exactly what you know and love Henson's company for, and watching their secrets in the making of feature only impresses you all the more. The puppeteering and animatronics, the character designs, all phenomenal.

It's a real shame I never saw this or Dark Crystal as a child, because this would have rocked my world.

                              Very highly recommend.

I remember seeing that new as a tyke. I specifically remember coming out of the theater and rolling up the foil wrapper of my Nestle Crunch bar as a make-shift crystal ball to be like Bowie's Jareth.

I remember seeing Dark Crystal too (probably on video since I would have been only 3 when it came out) and the witch scared the crap out of me.
