Get Smart (2008)

American secret agency Control (led by Alan Arkin) is locking in battle against criminal organization KAOS (led by Terence Stamp). When Control is attacked and all of its agents compromised, they send in the only two people who stand a chance at saving the world: strategist Maxwell Smart (Steve Carell) and legendary field operative Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway).


This film was hilarious. All kinds of jokes and slapstick gags, spy humor and general nonsense. It's loaded with stars (Terry Crews and David Koechner, the latter known as Champ from Anchorman; James Caan; Patrick Warburton; Bill Murray; Masi Oka; and Ryan Seacrest). My dad thought this one Jaws-like henchman was playing by the Iron Sheik, but it's actually Dalip Singh (his character uses his real first name).

Overall, this was a brilliant film, with a solid and humorous story and some amazing acting (and with a cast like that, how could they not wow audiences? Especially when one of the film's consultants was Mel Brooks!).

Very highly recommend.

seen Ghostbusters today, i liked it yes and loved the way they used the original cast BUT no i'm not getting the DvD (it wasn't that good)

Ultraman: The Next (2004)

"Your daddy loves you very much; more than his F-15 Eagle."

The first Ultraman movie I've seen because although there's a bunch of them in Japan, they are hard to find here. This one (which I found on Youtube) has a crappy English dub (a bunch of characters sound like Jackie Chan). The story was decent (though melodramatic). The Ultraman Next himself (a one-off continuity) was really different for having an insectoid appearance. The fights were pretty good, though not common enough. And yes, this Ultraman does have a timer.


Tales from the Crypt" Demon Knight (1995)

"Get that pussy off the table! ... I meant the cat."

MP-05's enthusiasm for this 90s horror gem (that I picked up at a con) made me put it to the top of the to-watch list.


The Marsupials: The Howling III (1987)

"You know this movie's about pop culture? In the 60s, Andy Warhol showed us how Pop could be high art. That everything is high art. That's what this is all about. For example, in your first scene you'll be gang raped by four monsters."

The thing that I liked the best about the TV show was that it went by Puritanical rules more than any other show or horror movie I can think of, including F13. The bade people got their just deserts and the good people got justice (most of the time. I can only think of a couple episodes where the morality lines were blurry. )

The French Connection (1971)

"I have not worked an honest day since I climbed down from the crane."

New York detectives "Popeye" Doyle (Gene Hackman) and Buddy Russo (Roy Scheider) uncover a plot by a local criminal to conduct a major international drug smuggle in league with a French businessman, and go to great lengths to catch the outlaws.

Based on actual events, this film won four Academy awards, and it shows. Both Hackman and Scheider are great, and Fernando Rey as the French drug dealer is a real attraction. This film is very much lauded for its car chase, in which Doyle in a GT races after an assassin who is aboard a train, but another car scene bears mention: the near-total dismantling of the Rey's luxury car in order to find its secrets.

The film is very grounded, gritty, and (for its time) fairly realistic. It's a time capsule, where 45 years later, viewers can see a completely different New York City and how things were back then (Times Square is unrecognizable since all the porn stores were shuttered), and the same can be said I suspect of Marseilles, though my knowledge of France is rather limited.

Do note, Hackman's character may be a "good cop" in the sense that he is a driven and focused officer, and he may be the protagonist, but arguing that he is a privately good man is up for grabs, since he twice displays blatant racism. Only two words throughout the entire film, but they do show a person's flaws.

Also very important, the film is adapted from actual events that were then transcribed into a book. As such, the ending is a little abrupt and "inconclusive," as what many would expect to happen doesn't, because that's what happened in real life. But they made a sequel, and that has an ending many would agree with. Speaking of, I should really check it out, as I've not seen it since childhood and will now understand its content much better (hadn't seen the first until tonight, I'm saying).

Wake in Fright (1971)

"What's the matter with him; he'd rather talk to a woman than drink?"

This film was apparently thought lost for a long time and was controversial, I think for two reasons: (1) it does not show Outback people in a good light; (2) it shows a drunken kangaroo hunt. It was a partly British-made film following a school teacher who wants to get to Sydney for the holidays, but makes a few bad choices and gets stuck with what we'd call drunken hillbillies here. Dark, but good. Scorcese is apparently a fan.

I'm apparently in a minority who thinks this movie is even funnier than the first. To me, that all comes down to Eric Bruskotter's brilliant performance as hapless hick catcher "Rube."

Ant-Man (2015)

Saved this for the family (actually got it from the library) and we all loved it.
