Are you going through all 4?

I liked that film. I need to pick it up on BD some day.

I'm highly leaning that way. I even kept the box set out, which is like a declaration of intent. I haven't seen them in ages.

I have mixed feelings about it. I remember the quality will go down hill, but on the other hand, they up the body count and add my boy, Lon Chaney Jr. I'll probably space them out a bit.

BTW: I thought the makeup effects on the mummy in Hand are really good for a cheap sequel. The (nearly) all-black eyes really add to the creepiness.

Of course, it's a Jack Pierce makeup, so I shouldn't be surprised.

            • Alien Resurrection- 1997

              "Make a nice souvenir."

For me, this is the weakest of the Weaver Alien films, although some would argue 3 is worse. This film was too....bright. Not enough darkness to set an appropriate mood like the previous 3, and the delivery of the dialogue seems overly enthusiastic. What makes Ellen Ripley such a great character is the repression of her innermost being, a subject she rarely talks about other than to warn others about their mistakes, which they all inevitably make. Considering the whole cloning idea, it's obvious the very best of Ripley never made it through the DNA sequencing.

I've read many articles about Joss Whedon cutting all ties to this film, as he felt it was completely wrong, and in certain ways, I can understand why. Sometimes, the best drama is that which is unspoken but merely implied; here, pretty much all the characters are over-dramatic representations of themselves, although, the symbiotic relationship between Ripley and the Aliens was a novel idea.

                  "Gotcha!"

Harry and Lloyd embark on a trip to find Harry's long-lost daughter, in the process becoming involved in yet another high-stakes scheme.

Yeah, this isn't as bad as I'd feared, but not as surprisingly-good as I'd hoped. I found it moderately funny, just not my thing anymore, but it had some good "these guys are total morons" bits. In a way, I'm glad they did make this actual sequel, especially given the lukewarm reception to When Harry Met Lloyd (although I did like the dream scene in that).

See, that quote right there is what sets the original Karloff Mummy's apart from the tana leaves boys. The story was never about death per se, it was about love and ever lasting life in the guise of a monster flick. Imhotep didn't want to be a mad scientist, nor was he afflicted with a disease he did not want, nor was he some nasty blood sacking creature. He loved a girl and wanted to bring them together spiritually and physically. Unfortunately, all these damn jackanape archaeologists got in the way because they fell for his girl.

Then the story changes to Kharis, who is basically an addict that obeys a dude who gives him his daily fix. They occasionally toy with the idea of a relationship with his girl, but the damn priest gets greedy and moves in on her. Quite a difference from the original.

Don't get me wrong; I love all the Universal Classic Monster flicks, including the Kharis Mummy stories, I just think they are a bit watered down and are some of the prime first examples of sequelitus.
