Quick little side story about the whole Chappaquiddick thing.....

I hate talking about politics mainly because of my Dad and his reaction to Kennedy as a person. ever since I can remember, whenever politics has come up in conversation between Dad and someone else, the conversation always ends up at Chappaquiddick. It's like my dad could never get past it or something. I only know the basics of what happened, but Dad took his hatred for Ted to whole new levels. When Ted finally did pass away, there was almost a celebration party at my house. It's kind of sad and funny at the same time to watch him go off about it, much like watching a monkey take a temper tantrum in a cage at the zoo.

It's probably the biggest reason I stray far away from politics as I can, and rightly so...if I ever did fall into the same rut as he did, I would want to suck face with a .45.

I hate to talk politics. Someone even called me on it recently. We were having a phone conversation and he was trying to discuss the election, but was getting one word answers from me. Then he said "you really don't like talking politics, do you?"

I just quoted that line because it was one of the easier ones that didn't need the context of seeing it.

          • Eh, I thought it was alright. Probably the most subdued Burton's ever been, which is saying something. I did enjoy how Waltz basically turned into a slasher villain halfway through, for a scene.

That's supposed to be "comics" right? I don't feel too qualified to speak to that. I've read FF comics, but they were never one I followed too long (I think I followed the Marvel Knights line longer than any) and never the original stuff.

Of all the FF movies (including the Corman flick, which is goofy fun), RotSS is my favorite. The Surfer stuff is excellent. When I saw it in theaters I was extremely disappointed that Galactus was an amorphous cloud since I always thought he was a super cool villain. Since I knew that, though, this time, it didn't bug me. Really, he's not so much the villain here as the catalyst.

In the PM you said this is probably Doom's best theatrical showing and I could get that. He does what Doom should--acts very smart and lofty and the plots against Reed and the good guys.

The jokes are mostly lame and Johnny (whom I used to like in the 80s) is pretty annoying. But overall, this is a fun film.

                  • ^ Re: RotSS

To the discriminating fan, his is probably the most faithful FF movie officially released to date.

The movie takes 2 or 3 direct stories from the comic meshed into one big story that for once actually works. At the box office, it did better than the first Tim Story flick, which pissed off a lot of fans, including yours truly (but only as time went on. Initially, I was just excited to see Doom on the screen in any capacity.)

So, it wasn't the best movie ever made, and it sure did have its faults. Galactus as a fart cloud. Ian Grufford as Reed Richards. The sweet sickly family feel of Tim Story. And probably a million other things that I can't remember at the moment, but it also had some major good points as well.

The stories that contributed to the movie from the comics were the Richards marriage, meeting of Norrin Rand, and to a lesser extent Galactus, Doom stealing the SS' power, and on a very light note, a nod to Super Skrull in idea. In a manner of speaking, it was executed fairly well. Johnny and Ben meshed together well, and are pretty much straight out of the comics. Alba wasn't bad, either. I got used to her after a while.

Julian McMahon was, imho, a great Doom for the story that was written in both the first and second movies. The unfortunate thing was that the first story sucked balls. Nobody liked business Doom, and for good reason- Fox had adhered to a good outline of the comics in their X Men movies, but just seemed to fail at portraying the richest villain in Marvel's entire pantheon. As we all know, it's a curse that has plagued the FF to this day, and one that needs to be remedied sooner rather than later. But I digress.

In hindsight, this was the most faithful representation of Doom from the comics to date. Gone was business Doom. We went back to some more familiar grounds. Doom was back in Latveria, he had super tech (although a helicopter seemed kinda rude), he did successfully steal the powers of the SS, and his face was (for a while) burnt to a crisp. Also, check out his his whole get up- the costume design this time around was excellent, even though it was only seen for the last few minutes of the movie. The only thing that they missed was the regalia and superiority of Doom as a man. The role still had B movie dialogue which really undermines the character and Victor was never a superficial schemer. It was always a bigger part of a plan for him.

So, all in all, not bad. I might re-watch it this weekend just for a refresher.

Since I've seen him do a good job with other roles (notably Amazing Grace), I keep feeling like he could've been good, but they had to up the dork factor to annoying levels. I'm not sure I like Alba as much as you. Don't get me wrong, she's beautiful and she doesn't specifically screw up anything, but she doesn't "feel" like Sue to me. She seems a little too "I'm just a girl" and not enough "I'm a tough scientist."

Like in the pic I posted? Yeah, it was pretty cool. I'm sure the costumer and producers were nervous over the look. Doom (like Magneto and others) is one of those designs that usually looks good and foreboding in the comics, but can be sophomoric when translated into real life.

                      • Really enjoyed this. It took a while to get going (the first thirty minutes or so, are all over the place in terms of story), but once it did I was really caught up in the Potter Universe again. My favorite character / performance was probably Dan Fogelman, who was really good as the human bystander who eventually gets involved in all of the madness. The rest of the cast was really good though.

                          • Jeff, Who Lives at Home (2011)

Jeff: This morning I was meant to have a business meeting with the Kevins and destiny, and now you're here at this, this weird hooters thing. And so now, I'm just trying to figure out how to proceed.

Pat: What you just said sounded like Yoda took acid and stumbled into a business meeting.

Jeff: You can make all the fun of Yoda that you want. Yoda would be fucking killer in a business meeting.

Stoner Jeff is asked by his mother to get some glue, but after a wrong-number caller flips out at him, he begins to see the name "Kevin" everywhere and takes it as a sign to find his destiny. Meanwhile, his brother Pat is at odds with his wife Linda, and gets caught up in Jeff's soul-searching.

This was a good film, very offbeat and atypical. With a plot like "idiot is told to get glue at the store, screws even that up," you wonder just how something so basic can turn into a 90-minute misadventure with a stunning ending, but this film really manages to answer the question.

I was very pleasantly surprised by this, and would say it's exactly what to watch on a lazy afternoon.
