    • Urotsukidoji: The Legend of the Overfiend (1989)

"Mankind, you are an ignorant race."

Well, this is definitely the most graphic anime I've watched (though I know there is more graphic stuff out there) and with the most instances of masturbation.

"You are confused by your imminent death."

          The Dark Valley (2014)

"Some things may not be spoken of, things from the past, from long ago. But this does not mean you can ever forget them. There are things that can never be forgotten."

An Austrian Western (set in the Alps instead of the Rockies, natch).

Kind of. I mean the story was fairly decent, but they obviously had way more nudity and sex (much of it demon-human, as you say) than the plot required. I only watched it because it was referred to in a commentary on an episode of Batman The Animated Series I recently listened to. I'd like to see more anime, particularly non-kids stuff, but I'm not very familiar with the genre. It's kind of over-whelming because there's so much of it yet on the other hand a lot of it isn't available here.

          • The creator of Overfiend also created Demon Beast Invasion (also demon-human erotica, and the manga is crazy as hell), so I don't think you'd be much into that series.

For mature, non-erotic anime: Vampire Hunter D films (last I checked there were only two, but it's been years since I've even thought of that); Ghost in the Shell (the first one, second isn't bad but drags and gets ultra-meta); Appleseed; Black Magic M-66; Sol Bianca; Zarem: The Animation (might be Zarim, can't remember); Akira; Darkside Blues; Tokyo Babylon; Gunsmith Cats; Macross Plus; Blood: The Last Vampire; Blue Seed.

Can't remember many other things at the moment, but I know I've seen all of those and enjoyed them to varying degrees. Some are films, others series (not especially long as I recall), some are both.

I'd also suggest Mad Bull 34 (complete series is out now since a little while). Haven't watched Black Lagoon, but I bought the full series (two seasons), but I did see the first episode and it was good. Only watched a little of Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade, but it seemed solid and I'll have to re-watch it later.

              La Femme Nikita (1990)

"There are two things that are infinite: femininity and means to take advantage of it."

I've seen the first Ghost in the Shell and liked it a lot (I'm very cautiously looking forward to the live-action adaptation). I've also seen the anime and live-action Blood. I have no good excuse for not having seen Akira at this point; it's famous and available enough that I should have. I'll keep the others in mind. I've heard of a couple.

              • No problem.

Just a sidenote: I honestly screwed up recommending Tokyo Babylon, because that's not a mature series.

I was thinking of Cyber City Oedo 808. Watch that instead.

Thanks. I'm not trying to avoid the kid-friendly stuff either. It's just that I think Miyazaki is the master in that area and I've seen most of his stuff.

                    • Moonlight - Good, I guess. A simple story that probably had a lot of useless scenes that do nothing to add to story but say everything about the director's style. I don't think its Best Picture worthy and while I enjoy Mahershala Ali in this and everything else I've seen him in, I don't think he had enough screen time to justify his nomination either.

                          • The Hateful Eight (2015)

"I can't feel my ass no more."

A bounty hunter returning a criminal for hanging picks up others along the way, and they all become stuck with more guests at a waystation. But there's a plot to free the criminal, and things begin to sour as the night goes on.

I thought it would be pretty hard in general to write a decent story about a bunch of people in a single room together, and granted it is, but this film makes it look very doable (though that goes more to show that Tarantino must have put significant effort into this film long before production began).

The location (Wyoming in winter) is utterly beautiful, and the haberdashery is actually oddly cozy. The costumes were also pretty varied, with my only real complaint being how "not warm enough" Madsen's attire looked (but that's a personal wrinkle and nothing even remotely significant).

The pacing for the film was pretty good, a regular flow that helped the nearly 3-hour length go right by. My only issue with the overall length was that there were definitely a few scenes that could have been shortened a little bit, but not a huge deal either way.

I think the only think I really didn't like about this was when Jackson was retelling how he cruelly tortured a man before killing him. I know the son came looking to commit racially-motivated murder, so I don't feel sorry, but damn if that scene wasn't completely jacked up in all sorts of ways.

As usual, the language is incredibly graphic (and I swear Tarantino intentionally set it post-Civil War so that he could spam the slurs more than usual, probably as a get-back to critics of his), and the violence is brutal when it happens.

I was really surprised to see this many stars, and that Ennio himself had done the score. Tarantino really put together something here, even if my mother absolutely hates this flick ("It's stupid").
