Hacksaw Ridge (2016)
"Let's go to work."
The true story of a young man who wanted to go to war yet refused to use a gun, insisting on becoming a medic. Facing scorn from his superiors and peers, he ends up displaying incredible courage and saving nearly two dozen fellow soldiers during the taking of Hacksaw Ridge from the Imperial Japanese forces.
I have to say this film is every bit as impressive as I've heard. Both Andrew Garfield and Hugo Weaving provide some great performances, and the rest of the squad Garfield (lead character Desmond Doss) is paired with are certainly great, and Vince Vaughn and Sam Worthington are also worthy of a lot of praise.
On the crew's side, Gibson has a strong directorial hand and good style, which is seen throughout the film but at its best during the climactic battle and aftermath. There's great camerawork all around, and some beautiful Virginia shots, especially the forests of the Blue Mountain area.
Overall, this is an excellent film about the brutal war in the Pacific, about morality, and about unflinching resolve in the face of horrible adversity.
Highly recommend.
