                    • The Shallows (2016)

"What was the name of this beach again?"

A young woman, Nancy (Netflix incorrectly names her Mia) goes to a secluded beach in Mexico for surfing, but ventures too close a shark's feeding ground. Injured, she engages in a desperate bid to survive while stranded dozens of yards from safety.

I thought this was a very good film. The visual style is something to behold, with the text and video on the phone appearing on screen like holographic projections, right next to the normal film's content; I really liked that approach.

It was also a good move how the film mixes above-water and below-water shots, with the sound being muffled and all but silenced when underneath the waves.

The main character, Nancy, is pretty well-written. I liked how her reason for visiting the beach is because her mother went there years ago, and it is basically a family tradition. Her interaction with her driver is also pretty enjoyable, just two people talking.

The shark I thought was also very well done. It doesn't look as "real" as the "Bruce" models they used in Jaws, but those were physical animatronics and this is CGI. It is very well done and detailed, aside from its teeth not working as they should in one particular scene (not a major gripe, but it just irked me a little). I personally liked the scarred-face detailing.

I suppose nursing/medical school viewers will be both irked and supportive of some elements of the film, such as how Nancy's wound is bad but probably a lot less vicious than it should be, while at the same time liking her own nursing background and analysis of her injuries and situation.

Overall a good film, showcasing a great visual style and with a simple but attention-holding story.

                      Recommend.

                        • Houses that October Built (2014)

"I'm going to f**k your world."

An okay (not great) found-footage horror where a group of friends look for more extreme haunted attractions and get in trouble.

                          The Killing Fields (1984)

                          "Here, only the silent survive."

                              "Spanish?
-No, Jew, but in Brooklyn first we learn Spanish then English."

Loved this. Heartfelt and funny; but what else should I expect from a Simons script?

                              Menace II Society (1993)

"The hunt is on, and you're the prey."

                              The French Connection II (1975)

"You know who Whitey Ford was? Oh, s**t. He was a dandy little southpaw. That's what we called him. He was a dandy little southpaw.
                              -Southpaw?
                              Yeah. He was a lefty.
                              -You mean a Communist?
No, he was a Republican. But he was somethin', I tell you."

Not great, but better than I expected from a sequel that probably shouldn't have been made.

                              Don't Bother to Knock (1952)

                              "You married?
                              -Sure, who's not?
You and your wife fight argue all the time?
-Some of the time she sleeps."

A good example of how Monroe could actually act.

Have I ever mentioned how much I love that movie? I mean besides the dozen or two times? It's funny, I was just listening to the Dickies (who did the theme song for that movie) when I popped into this thread and I briefly thought "maybe I should listen to the Killer Klowns too."
