"I did not see that coming."

Ex-CIA legend Frank Moses is once more pulled into the thick of it as he and his friends are targeted in connection with a plot to use a weapon of mass destruction. They need to find out what the weapon is, where it is, and stop the real bad guys from getting their hands on it.

It's been a little while since I saw the first, but most of the same players return. Malkovich is easily my favorite here, turning in a wonderfully entertaining performance as Marvin. Willis's Frank is just as hard-nosed as ever, and we get a great youngblood in the form of Korean acting legend Byung Hun Lee (the scene with him and the Russian cops is stellar).

I thought the plot was a bit better this time around, some more "old flames and double crosses" elements keeping things humorous and attention-holding.

The stunts and fights were predictably over-the-top, with some good car scenes courtesy of Lee and Mirren; Willis gets a good workout in a couple scenes but now has to share the spotlight.

Overall a good film, definitely not suffering from the all-too-real syndrome of sequels being inferior.

    Recommend.

    • Been in a Beatles mood lately (not that rare), so I watched the Lester movies:

      Help! (1965)

"There's somebody been in this soup."

      A Hard Day's Night (1964)

"The place is surging with girls.
-Please, sir, sir, can I have one to surge me, sir, please, sir?"

        • Skull Island put me in a mood to watch the three main titles, which I finished tonight with . . .

          King Kong (1976)

"Let's not get eaten alive on this island."

          White Heat (1949)

          "Go read your comic books."

-Because I'm a recovering heroin addict maybe.
I hate my wife. I mean, since we're sharing."

              Turistas (2006)

So, I liked it, but it was about on the level of #7; over-the-top-James-Bond stuff. I loved the opening Cuban race. I wasn't too happy that they accepted Shaw consider he's not only a callous mass murderer, but specifically Han's killer.
See, that's really the only problem that I had with the film. I could overlook all the special-ops military stuff and the over-the-top stunts and effects, the crazy sub scene and even the government letting loose two murderers to catch an even bigger threat to the world, but not Dom working with someone that's responsible for murdering a member of his "family." I mean, they made a film almost specifically about bringing Shaw to justice for Han's death, and now this?

                      To Catch a Thief (1955)

"Danielle, you are just a girl. She is a woman.
-Why buy an old car if you can get a new one cheaper? It will run better and last longer."

Agreed. Racing vs spy movie is just a matter of my druthers. I still enjoy 5-7 despite Dom's crew being the new Mission Impossible, but that aspect was a character betrayal. Now, when I get to that bit in #7 when Sean asks Dom what he's going to do when he finds Han's killer I'll always think "invite him to dinner." And Deckard Shaw isn't just a guy that has happened to kill a guy in a fair fight. He's a guy that murders hospital orderlies and security because they're kind of in his way. He's a frigging psychopath.

                        • Ginger (1971)

"All you ever needed was a guy who wore the pants."

Horrible, though I think the bad lighting bothered me more than the bad acting or the exploitative elements.

The U.S. vs. John Lennon (2006)

"Is it naive to wish for peace? Is it naive to think that we can change the world? Yeah, probably, but it's certainly worthy of the thought process and the art that comes out of it."

                          • Central Intelligence (2016)

                            "I don't like bullies."

The former king and laughingstock of high school reunite twenty years later after a hacker steals government secrets, attempting to thwart the sale and save the world.

My mother disliked this, and while some of it was a bit off for me, I found it to be pretty amusing. Hart is hilariously exaggerated as a normal guy getting sucked into a major espionage game, and Johnson is something to behold. His demeanor goes from his usual big-and-tough to almost childish in his enthusiasm and confidence, and I'm not gonna lie, I kind of want that unicorn shirt.

I actually was kind of surprised and got a lot out of the reunion with the former bully, it was a really touching scene...and then the twist, and it got a different kind of touching and funny all at once. But hey, the ending concludes things perfectly. I really have to hand it to the writer(s), great job in that scene alone.

Overall fairly enjoyable (that marriage counseling scene, man...), and something I'd recommend for a good laugh.

                            • Been in a Lucha Libre mood lately, so

                              Lucha Mexico (2016)

"If you're totally healthy, that means you're not pushing it."

                              Nacho Libre (2006)

"Chancho, when you are a man, sometimes you wear stretchy pants in your room. It's for fun."

But the Beatles mood isn't quite done either, so last night:

                              The Beatles' Yellow Submarine (1968)

"Liverpool can be a lonely place on a Saturday night, and this is only Thursday morning."

So, maybe in my dreams tonight the Beatles will wrestle Mexican style in their Sgt. Pepper uniforms.

A hodge podge of movies (first two I've seen before) Saturday as they near expiration on Instant Netflix:

                              Cujo (1983)

                              "There are no real monsters.
-Except for the one in my closet."

The Sons of Katie Elder (1965)

"I don't want to be rich and respectable. I want to be just like the rest of you."

Not the best Wayne western (not even the best Wayne/Martin) and the age range of the four brothers is pushing it, but it's still fun and the music is really good.

                              A Man Called Peter (1955)

"The Lord could do with a few senators and vice versa."

The whole family liked this biopic about a Scotsman who comes to the States and becomes minister at Lincoln's former DC church and then becomes Senate chaplain.

                              • Just got from the theater. Thought it was blast. I'm not sure if it's good as the first GOTG, but it does manage to be emotional & character driven*then that film was, even if the attempts at going from humor to be serious were a bit jarring. Ego was actually fairly*good & I got a kick out of the various after-credit scenes. Drax practically stole the show for me too. The only big issue is that I thought that Mantis was a bit underused, but otherwise it was quite good. Definitely gonna try to see this in the cinema again, if I get the chance.

And aside from the actual use of songs, but was it just me or did Tyler Bates actually compose some decent-ish music for this film? Good stuff!

                                8 / 10
