I actually own and like Tyler Bates score to the first film and think it's very underrated. He really surprised me with that one. I'm glad to hear that his sequel score might have surpassed the first one. Hopefully it will get released as a deluxe edition 2-CD set with the Awesome Mix Vol.2 soundtrack like the first GotG.

I could think of nothing more appropriate than watching some guys from Minnesota mock a poorly-dubbed English version of a movie about a Mexican wrestler battling vampires.

I like that one. It's very subtle compared to most antichrist movies since then.

                • The Magnificent Seven (1960)

"Never rode shotgun on a hearse before."

Fed up with a bandit gang raiding their town, Mexican farmers hire a group of American gunslingers to defend their village.

Never saw this before, and many, many years since my father probably watched it as a boy.

I gotta say, Yul Brynner is a damn acting god. He's literally a bald John Wayne. Plays such a firm character (strong, decisive, but with a heart and morals he doesn't waver on), and makes a great natural leader for the squad. That hearse scene was tense, man!

The rest of said Seven are pretty well-rounded. Each of them has a great moment (or several) where we get to see just what makes them tick. I especially liked how the group of kids kept wanting to get to know the one man, practically adopting him.

I actually have to applaud (to a degree) the villain, Calvera. He was actually written fairly well, not just some thug leading other thugs. He had a rationale even if it was warped, and was actually somewhat practical. The acting on his part was also top-notch.

Sadly, now that I've seen the beauty of the original, I don't know if the remake will come half as close. I don't doubt that the actors did fine work, and I don't doubt that the crew did fine work, but I'm probably now poisoned in favor of a 50-year-old cinematic masterpiece. I also need to see Seven Samurai at some point in the near future (my dad has a mild opinion of it, but I don't think he's fully watched it yet).

                  Highly recommend.

Love this movie. Seen it many times. I remember a professor in seminary offhandedly challenging anyone to name all seven actors. I had to watch it again to spark my memory, but I eventually came back with them (off the top of my head at that point) and challenged him to name the survivors (which he did IIRC).

Besides the obvious performances of Brynner and McQueen, Vaughan is also great as the scoundrel-forced-to-fight. Wallach's baddie is a classic.

And the theme is so great! Overall, this may be my favorite Americanization of a foreign film (a practice I usually don't dig). Glad you liked it.

When you see Seven Samurai, make sure you set aside enough time (it's 3 and a half hours) and that you're in the mood for a slow-burn, but epic drama. The benchmark of all samurai movies. I need to watch it again soon now that I have the Criterion BD. I'm going to try to get my film club to watch it some time, but I know it's asking a lot for people to sit that long in possibly uncomfortable chairs in someone's house.

                    • Thanks for the heads-up, I'll let my dad know. He'll probably want to grab a few beers. I'll have to stop by his place earlier than usual.

I'm not sure how I missed this movie. It's about the German tours of the early Beatles and focusing on the short-lived Stu Sutcliffe. Pretty good.

                              • It's the anniversary (62, now) of Ed Wood's classic again and I'm in the habit of watching it at least once a year (usually more):

                                Bride of the Monster (1955)

"Now here in this forsaken jungle hell I have proven that I am all right."

And for the full moon last night:

                                Waxwork (1988)
