The documentary ("rockumentary") of a heavy metal band, showcasing their vapid personalities, eccentric shows, terrible marketing, and underwhelming success, spoofing nearly every part of the rock 'n' roll lifestyle.

I heard about this a long time ago, from another kid in high school (circa 2003/4), but never got around to checking it out.

    Now I'm glad I did.

This thing is hilarious. It's so straight-faced in how these guys think they're great, but they mismanage themselves into the ground and somehow just keep shuffling along.

Their "pod" and "Stonehenge" set moments were goddamn hilarious, and I noticed the "18 inches" mistake right off the bat when they were planning it. Personally, I think it looked good even as a screw-up (the intro monologue was great, I thought).

Overall a damn funny flick, something any music buff should check out. Oh, and there was an article (I originally had trouble even viewing it once, because of issues with the host site), satirically claiming that the official soundtrack to this film has to date only made $98 USD. To quote a reddit user, "This is the most Spinal Tap thing ever."

    Highly recommend.
The same group of actors (largely, anyway) were involved in several other mockumentaries that I also found hilarious. The ones I've seen were "Waiting for Guffman", "A Mighty Wind", and "Best in Show". Don't know if there were any others. I particularly recall finding "Best in Show" very amusing.

Those are the ones I'm familiar with and they're all great. Apparently, Christopher Guest has also done Mascots and For Your Consideration (besides non-mockumentaries).

          • Monster Dog (1985)

            "He's pulling on my hair!"

A rock star and his crew move back to his hometown and family home to find inspiration for new songs, but a series of brutal murders by wild dogs resurfaces old fears about the rocker's father, who was killed by locals who thought he was a werewolf.

Starring Alice Cooper and made by a bunch of Italians and Spanish/Mexicans (seriously, the credits are nothing but names from these two cultures, like a spaghetti western), this is a schlock flick, but I actually kind of liked it.

The camera work is sub-par, the lighting has more god rays than a Bethesda Softworks game, and there's more fog/mist than a '40s horror romp. The location is limited to a single place aside from some backroads: the mansion Cooper grew up in. It's spacious, but not especially large, and nothing in it really comes off as imposing, sinister, malicious, or really anything aside from generic; the place has no personality.

As such, there aren't exactly attention-getting visuals just from the scenery, and so we have to ask, "What does the cast look like?"

Cooper has some early costume work, dressing up as a small variety of characters, but for the rest of the film everyone is in plainclothes, which works because the film really only takes place over a couple of days' time. Except, you know, that they only seem to have their day clothes and their sleeping wear, when they aren't shooting a music video. Good planning ahead, guys.

The acting is pretty groan-worthy, with even Cooper dialing it in (doesn't help the script is pretty bad). The writer must have been told to start on Friday and finish on Saturday, because he had to attend mass on Sunday or something.

The action sequences (really only at the end) aren't terrible, but they aren't very exciting, but I blame that more on the whole film being rather lukewarm more than the scenes being themselves awful. The titular Monster Dog is hardly ever seen, so you don't get a good look at the design, but even when he shows up, it's more welcome than scary (I did like when he burst through the wall, and before that knocking on the door wasn't bad for build-up, but otherwise the painting was probably the most surprising showing).

The gore effects are actually okay, though I laughed when the one dude gets the top of his head blown clean off, only to make a whole range of facial expressions before dying.

I found the car constantly rocking when upside down to be very annoying.

Overall, definitely not winning any awards, but it isn't so bad that you can't spend an easy afternoon watching this with a beer in hand.

This. I like the quote you cited as it's very appropriate of the film.

I enjoyed this film. Maybe my 3rd favorite in the franchise.

I really like that movie and own a copy. It's the best at trying to tell the whole story (Malory's version anyway). Most of the other movies seem to focus on young Arthur, Lancelot's betrayal, or the grail, but that one really tried to make an epic of the whole thing. Plus I dig the look of it. And it introduced me to Orff's "O Fortuno."

That confrontation was a strong scene.

I'm a fan of Lawrence of Arabia so I loved how they recalled David's ties to that film (the one I noticed this time was him singing "The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo" in echo).

                        In a word: Captivating

Split is a step in the right direction for M. Night Shymalan as film has his signature for suspense and thrills. The pace of the film is great as it does not really spend much time in the beginning of the film to set up characters or plot, it just delves into the story. Moreover, there's really no wasted scene as pretty much everything enhances and builds the story.

And of course, the performances of the lead actors are amazing as they go through a wide range of emotions. The movie is worth seeing just based on that.

By film's end, we're given the larger world of its setting.

Thumbs way up for this one.

                          • Running Scared (1986)

                            "Throw me your pants!"

Two hot-shot cops infuriate their superior while trying to nab a drug lord, and are forced to take a vacation to Key West. But it isn't long before they resume the chase.

I found this to be very amusing. Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines have this hilarious chemistry, these two goofballs who manage to be partners on the force, and their constant and creative harassment of the character Snake is a laugh to behold. It also stars Jimmy Smits as the villain, and my dad was surprised to see him in that role, considering he played a good guy on NYPD Blue, I think (my mom used to love that show to death, I can barely remember it).

And then they go down to Key West and things get '80s as hell. Loved it.

There were some great visual stunts and set pieces, especially the location of the final showdown. The chase scene was basically an '80s tweaking of the one from The French Connection, I swear. Great stuff.

                            Highly recommend.

                            • E.T. (1982)

                              "Where's the playground?
                              -It's near the preschool!
                              Where's that?
-I don't know streets! Mom always drives me!"

I hadn't seen this in quite a while. I forgot a lot of details and how good it is.
I heard JJ Abrams is doing a sequel--E.T. comes back to visit, finds out Gertie is a crack addict and stabs Elliott.

                              Adventureland (2009)

"I think somebody was trying to write 'Satan Lives' on that wall but they spelled it 'Satin Lives.'
-One of those textile worshiping cults no doubt."

I liked this one. Despite earning its 'R' in language and including an extramarital affair it was kind of sweet.

                              Art of Conflict (2012)

"It's not hard to pollute an innocent mind."

A documentary (narrated by Vince Vaughan and made by his sister) just about the wall art in Northern Ireland used by both sides of the conflict. Quite interesting. Definitely should be worthwhile to anyone who cares about the Troubles, but probably also to most who are interested in art as propaganda.

                              • Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

                                In a word: Swashbuckling

I don't remember much of the first three films as the blend together in my memory, and I skipped that fourth one. However, I don't feel like I needed in order to enjoy this movie. I felt this movie was a good and fun adventure on the high seas.

I know critics have slammed Johnny Depp's performance in the film, and to a certain extent I agree that it's a bit too much a caricature on Jack Sparrow; meaning very cartoony and lacks any depth or seriousness. But, I view Jack Sparrow in this film a Charlie Chaplin type of character/performance that's meant to be fun and carefree.

I thought the other two main characters were serviceable to the story. They remind of Rachel Weiz and Brendan Fraser's characters in The Mummy, where Weiz was the brains and Fraser the adventurer. I think if you liked the first two The Mummy films, you'll most likely like this Pirates film as it's pretty much the same story, pace and characters, plus Jack Sparrow.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tells is a light fun popcorn flick that managed to entertain and amuse me.

                                Thumbs up.
