I heard JJ Abrams is doing a sequel--E.T. comes back to visit, finds out Gertie is a crack addict and stabs Elliott.
Interestingly, there WAS a sequel written as a novel. As a kid I remembered really enjoying it. I happened upon a used copy as an adult and snapped it up...only to find it was horrifically bad upon rereading. For anybody with a morbid curiosity, it was called "ET: The Book of the Green Planet".

(Though perhaps I'm in the minority in finding it so terrible. Various reviews I've seen seem much more complimentary than I can fathom them being.)

    • Godzilla vs. Mothra (1992)

"My company has destroyed many forests. I feel very guilty."

MST3K: Hercules Against the Moon Men (1964/1992)

"My backpack is filled with pecks!"

      Rio Lobo (1970)

"Are you serious or are you crazy?
      -Little bit of both."

Howard Hawks' last movie. Not his best, but not bad. The plot is a little overly complicated for the kind of movie, but not hard to follow (just a lot of subplots).

My comment was total troll bait, but I figured most people here would know it was a joking dig.

Not sure I'd want to read that book, though I'd probably pick it up if I saw it at a library sale or flea market.

        • Abar: [The First] Black Superman (1977)

"You better run, you giant honky!"

          After the Wedding (2006)

"Every acquaintance, every friend, every person who has a place in your heart; it is the time with them that really means something."

          Stone (2010)

          "We're all God's co-workers."

Depressing and arguably nihilistic, but it had its moments.

            • Beyond Re-Animator (2003)

              "She's not getting any fresher."

The Day the World Ended (2001)

"I deserve to die for what I've done in my life, but I'm a coward."

Alright. I could see the "twist" from a mile away. It has nothing to do with the Roger Corman original (which I love) except that they bought the rights to the name and show a clip from it on the TV in the movie.

              Cabin Fever: Patient Zero (2014)

"You're going to need a referral."

A prequel to the 2002 movie and pretty much as weak as I expected. The best part is definitely when two infected ladies get into a fight and the gore starts flying, literally.

              • Universal Soldier (1992)

                "Goodbye, asshole."

When resurrected American soldiers are used as cyborg super-men to fight modern-day battles, the program at first is a success. But resurfacing memories cause two of them to return to their old personalities and tear everything apart.

I saw this many years ago as a kid (my dad said something about it being my favorite on VHS, I'm pretty sure that wasn't even close to true).

After all these years, both my dad and I think this holds up fairly okay. The visuals are fairly solid, and the writing can at times be schlocky (the diner scene and the hotel clerk, for example), but you do get some good shots (the Vietnam intro is certainly eerie, and the plane-truck reveal, and hell just that big-rig itself, are worth seeing). You also get some good stunts during the Hoover Dam part.

The recovery of life for Luc (Van-Damme) and the breakdown of Scott's mind (Lundgren) are portrayed in a non-shabby manner, but I think the writing for seeing Lundgren again dissolve into a besieged-warrior psychosis could have been tweaked a bit, a dark parallel to VD's characterization.

It was good seeing Jerry Orbach without solid-silver hair, too.

Overall I think this has aged decently. Roland Emmerich did a good job back in the day, enough to garner a small franchise for the studio, and it isn't bad to spend an afternoon on.

                • Didn't plan it this way, but since yesterday, I've watched a trio of films recommended by posters here.

                  The Slayer (1982)

"Things ain't always what they appear to be."

                  Beat Street (1984)

"This ain't New York. This is the Bronx."

                  The Void (2016)

                  "This is hell!"

                    • Blow (2001)

"I went in with a Bachelor of marijuana, came out with a Doctorate of cocaine."

                      Soul Surfer (2011)

"I don't need easy. I just need possible."

This girl (who was hot in the news at the time) is one of those people who makes me feel really lazy. While surfing she loses her arm to a shark and not only gets back on a board as soon as she medically can, but returns to national-level competition too.

                      From the Dark (2014)

                      "The light-turn it back on!"

A couple gets stuck in the Irish countryside when creatures afraid of the light attack. Bit of a slow burn, but pretty good. One thing I liked is that there are a lot of old horror movies set on the moors that could be set anywhere, but the bog is actually well used here.

It's definitely supposed to as you might gather from Dave's comments. The makers were self-proclaimed 80s horror fans and cited The Thing (IIRC) as a primary influence.

                      • Wonder Woman - 8 / 10 - it kicked some real ass. Aside from a typical CBM epic dark climax, there was a lot to like about it, the action sequences were great and Pine and Gadot had some really great chemistry too. Thumbs up to DC and WB for doing something right for a change!

                        • Mystery Science Theater 3000: Werewolf (1995/1998)

"So far the star power consists of Charlie Sheen's uncle."

                          ================================================== ========

                          The Godfather (1972)

"A man who doesn't spend time with his family can never be a real man."

Saw this for the first time ever in a theater. TCM and Fathom were showing it at the local AMC twice Sunday and today. I saw it with about 20 people at 2:00 pm and we clapped at the end, which was great. Noticed some things I haven't seen (or forgot) from the small screen. The short intro and conclusion were pretty cool too (like learning that Coppola wasn't impressed with the novel during his first read, but got it and knew what he'd do the moment he first saw Sicily).

It put me in such a Godfather mood that I started Pt. 2 on BD after dinner, but unfortunately my Dad decided to call when I was 45 minutes in and talked so long that I don't expect to get past half way tonight.

                          EDIT: finished it Thursday night

                          The Godfather: Part II (1974)

"My final offer is this: nothing."

Isn't that the one where one of the guys remarks "So his secret plan is to destroy all security guards by turning them into werewolves and having them crash their cars"?

                            • Aflie (1966)

                              "She's in beautiful condition."

                              Not a very nice guy.

Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever (2009)

                              "Prom blows."

Despite the director disavowing this movie, I thought it wasn't that bad for a years-later horror sequel. The characters are forgettable, but it has a lot of the same sick humor as the first movie. If horror movies have taught me anything, it's that I made the right decision not to go to prom.

That's the one. I think it's one of their best. I've watched it a few times. Tonight it was my full-moon choice.
