It's hard to dislike a movie in which Iggy Pop dons a bunny costume and Tarzan-swings a bobby socker away from a doo-wop group.

        • Shit, I remember seeing Split Second on TV as a kid, and then one day a while later was over my neighbor's and saw it on the program guide.

I was very disappointed when I realized he was right and that it was the same-name game show.

Apparently, there is also a 50s movie with the same title and a TV one. I became aware of this one when I saw Cine Masochist's review of it. It was worth a watch (especially since it was free on Youtube), but the characters interacted in that way (probably intentionally for its near-future setting) that just doesn't click as real. Hauer is as good as ever.

              • Oh, we're back in one of those spots where I'm the only one watching movies. A small movie where the story behind it mirrors the movie: an FX creator just wants to make a movie, but is getting exploited by a greedy producer. Fun. Unfortunately not on disc yet.

I think (not 100% sure) this is the first time I watched these two as a double feature (though I'm pretty sure I did back-to-back nights before), but it works because they're pretty different and both still good (imho):

                The Evil Dead (1981)

"She's your girlfriend; you take care of her."

                Evil Dead (2013)

"I will rip your soul out, daddy."

                Within the Woods (1978)

"You're only cursed by the evil spirits if you violate the graves of the dead. We're just gonna be eating hotdogs."

                  Invictus (2009)

"Brothers, sisters, comrades: I am here because I believe you have made a decision with insufficient information and foresight. I am aware of your earlier vote. I am aware that it was unanimous. Nonetheless, I believe we should restore the Springboks; restore their name, their emblem and their colors, immediately. Let me tell you why. On Robben Island, in Pollsmoor Prison, all of my jailers were Afrikaners. For 27 years, I studied them. I learned their language, read their books, their poetry. I had to know my enemy before I could prevail against him. And we DID prevail, did we not? All of us here... we prevailed. Our enemy is no longer the Afrikaner. They are our fellow South Africans, our partners in democracy. And they treasure Springbok rugby. If we take that away, we lose them. We prove that we are what they feared we would be. We have to be better than that. We have to surprise them with compassion, with restraint and generosity; I know, all of the things they denied us. But this is no time to celebrate petty revenge. This is the time to build our nation using every single brick available to us, even if that brick comes wrapped in green and gold. You elected me your leader. Let me lead you now. "

Watched last night with my dad (got back later than I expected, didn't feel like reviewing until I got some sleep).

Amazing film. Great visuals and a deeply philosophical/compassionate angle, showing the struggle of not just becoming the leader of a divided nation but figuring out how to unite them as a single people without alienating anyone.

This doesn't focus on the election, I should note, it's about how Mandela used rugby and compassion to overcome the divided feelings people had about him and the new government and to get people to get along with each other.

One of the most hair-raising scenes was with the airplane. You'll know what I mean.

My dad was talking a bit about the Springboks because he remembered some of this stuff happening.

I have to say Freeman really presented a magnificent figure here, an old man with the weight of the world on his shoulders and he doesn't yield, wise beyond his years after decades of incredible suffering. The prison visit was both enlightening and haunting.

Matt Damon did a wonderful job as Francois Pienaar. He was beaten but unbowed the same as Freeman's Mandela, and came across as just a rugby player who wanted to see his team do well. I particularly liked the scene where he wanted the team to learn the national anthem for real instead of just mouthing it, and the team visiting the kids and teaching them reminded me immediately of how NFL teams here do the same thing.

Overall a wonderful film, very humane and compassionate, uplifting and inspirational. Just keep in mind, you'll need to put subtitles on because it can be tricky to understand the South African accents and some of the audio is a little quiet.

I usually just feel guilty that I'm spending so much time on movies and when they get stacked up like that it just emphasizes it. That's why I move them and repost, to spread it out a little.

And yet Invictus is a movie I meant to see, but just never got around to. Can't believe it's over 8 years old already.

                    • Creation of the Humanoids (1962)

                      "Are you godless, Cragis?"

Long after a nuclear war devastated Earth, mankind has rebuilt using robots to help restore and advance society. But some men, the Order of Flesh and Blood, fears that robots are becoming too advanced and replacing mankind wholesale.

This is a great classic sci-fi with racial subtext (white oppression of black in the civil rights era). Some of the dialog, especially Dr. Raven and the one robot discussing who created who, is incredibly witty.

Can be watched for free on YouTube.

                        Sub-par early 80s slasher.

I Spit on Your Grave (2010)

"You're too dumb to know how dumb you are."

                        Dallas Buyers Club (2013)

"Sometimes I just feel like I'm fighting for a life I just ain't got time to live. I want it to mean something."

So good. At first, Woodroof just comes off as a jerk in a bad situation, but when it gets into the fight against the FDA just to ease people's suffering, it's hard not to be moved.

What We Do in the Shadows (2014)

"Leave me to do my dark bidding on the internet!

I am bidding on a table."

Excellent mockumentary about a group of vampires dealing with the undead life in Wellington, New Zealand. I'll be buying this eventually.

                            Blood and Bone (2009)

"Profanity is a brutal vice. He who uses it, is not a gentleman."

I liked that, but I have to admit I was hoping for a bit more since I know it was a pet project of Besson's (Valerian was a big influence on him and Meziezes' work in particular led to Fifth Element).

                            • I think Dallas Buyers Club is the best movie I've seen that was made in the 21st century. Matthew McConaughey's character starts out being pretty obnoxious, but develops into a truly heroic figure.

Cool concept (though it was also done in Darkness Falls) with some good scenes but overall mediocre PG-13 horror.

I don't know where I'd rank it at this point, but it was really, really good and you don't have to be particularly interested in AIDS activism or medical rights. It's just an engaging and very human story.
