The Last Castle (2001)

I think I saw this when it was new (it was pretty familiar), but it's a decent flick about an imprisoned general who stirs the other inmates to challenge the sadistic warden.

These two movies were produced by Ken Curtis, who played Festus on Gunsmoke for 13 seasons.

I haven't seen that in ages. I still love when the first anaconda kills Mateo, snapping his neck was awesome then and still holds up. Film may be hokey but it's still pretty enjoyable un-riffed. Second one is pretty dumb though.

Yeah, I've seen all five in the "series" including the Lake Placid crossover and I'd say #1 is the only one worthwhile. It is corny and the spfx are really dated 22 years later, but it's fun riffed or not (I own it on BD).

When the Transporter kidnaps Batman's girlfriend, she can only use a busted phone to randomly call a cellphone. Luckily, it happens to be Captain America's. Or something like that.

I think that's the safe choice. Seriously, the only positive I can say about any of them is that Yancy Butler (whom I was a fan of in the 90s) is in the LP crossover (because she was in that series earlier), but even that's not worth it. She has plenty of better roles to stick with.

The Killing (1956)

"You couldn't do the right thing, even with a gun pointed at your head."

An ambitious career criminal and a gang of co-conspirators come up with a plan to rob the local race track, but the ambitions of one member's wife and her paramour may send the entire plan spinning out of control.

I gotta say, watching this gave me serious vibes of The St. Valentine's Day Massacre, the old docu-drama. The film has this really clear, smooth, and well-paced style so that you can follow it without much trouble (aside from the George Steele clone and his thick-as-molasses accent). Stanley Kubrick really knew how to make a film.

My dad and me kept coming up with guesses as to how the whole thing would fall apart at any given point, especially during the big heist. Hell, we both were fairly certain the cashier would shoot the mastermind after the lie his wife told him. It did become pretty comedic when Johnny decided to stop thinking clearly, buy a shitty suitcase, and try to play it by ear; after all the planning he just throws caution to the wind in a mad dash. This is basically a masterclass in making a dark comedy.

Glad I caught this suggestion on Netflix. Highly recommend.

I wasn't expecting much (and pretty much got that), but wanted to see it just because it's fairly famous. Surprisingly, ELO/Jeff Lynne did almost all the music. I also didn't realize Gene Kelly was a major character in it (and did decently on roller skates).

The Killing (1956) ... Highly recommend.

I haven't seen that in years. Gotta pick up the Criterion BD one of these days.

Turned 20 today. I forgot how funny this was (maybe because I dropped off SP fandom), even though it was one of my first two DVD purchases.

Surprisingly mediocre first movie of Sam Peckinpah. Really the redeeming quality is the acting, though even there Keith-O'Hara have none of the chemistry of say Wayne-O'Hara.

I'm not surprised that you know all that. I heard about that show and that it looked to be a really good one though cancelled. DC was surprisingly boring, but it also didn't "feel" like a Peckinpah movie.

The Westerner is in the public domain, as is The Deadly Companions, and all 13 episodes are posted online. I'm going to post a link in the Videos forum. I highly recommend it, especially the episodes called Jeff, Mrs. Kennedy, Treasure and Hand on the Gun.
