  • Pet Sematary (2019)

    "Sometimes dead is better."

Not really awful, but neither my family nor I dug this and the changes they made were baffling. The ending was kind of neat; not necessarily better, but very sinister.

    • I viewed this as part of a research paper I'm writing, and had some surprising insights.
It's a decent movie, too. Not great by today's standards, but amazing in the 50's.

      • The Basement (2018)

        "I'm not Billy!"

Better than I expected (though not a classic). Technically in the torture porn category, but has some thought to it and the twist did catch me though I should have seen it coming (they gave you enough clues to know it was a possibility).

I love that movie and have it on BD. It was very influential. There's a Doctor Who episode that totally rips it off (the writer later admitted it). What was the thrust of your paper or at least in citing FP?

I was viewing it with an eye for potential parallels with the McCarthy era Red Scare, and was surprised by how many there appeared to be, mostly because I wasn't really expecting there to be any.

          • The Cars that Ate Paris (1974)

"You know your brother is dead. The funeral is arranged for 11 o'clock. In the meantime, you can come up and see me in my office.
            -Welcome to Paris!"

Peter Weir's feature debut. Hard to explain; more a psychological flick than true horror. Basically, a rural Australian town survives by causing and plundering from auto accidents, but a surviving brother gets caught in the middle as the youngsters become more uncontrollable.

Star Trek took quite a lot from Forbidden Planet.

              • Manglehorn (2014)

"You look great. Like a racehorse."

Did not like. Mostly consists of old Al Pacino (as a locksmith who has alienated everyone and pines for an ex-girlfriend) mumbling about how much life sucks. Slightly redeeming at the very end.

[Rifftrax:] The Last Slumber Party (1988 [2014])

"It's Porky's, but without the dignity and class."

                  • Axcellerator (2020)

                    "Beware the blonde in black."

Not great and not exactly recommended but not too bad for a B action comedy. It's free to watch on Rifftrax's web site this weekend (unriffed). Apparently, riffing Time Chasers twice led to a friendship between that director and the MYSTies. It's about a car jacker that is given a teleportation device by a scientist on the run from the government. The fanboy casting (including Sam Jones and Sean Young) made me worry that it was going to be one of those Sharknado-style self-aware deals, but it felt more like the slightly tongue-in-cheek direct-to-video actioners of the 90s.

The Second Best Marigold Hotel (2015)

                    "How was America?
                    -It made death more tempting."

About as good as the first, which is good.

                      • On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)

"I've taught you to love chickens."

Wanted to see this again since I read the bool.

Police Academy [7]: Mission to Moscow (1994)

"The red zone is for communist parking only!"

And done. I think this is the only one I hadn't seen (maybe I did, not sure). It felt very different.

                        • Half the cast missing from 7 didn't help. It's not a bad film, but compared to the first six, it's a clear step down. But the making-of was fascinating to watch.

                          • Black Roses (1988)

"I'm going home or maybe to a bar, yeah, whichever I pass first."

From the maker of Zombie Nightmare and Rock 'n' Roll Nightmare. Goofy fun (and strange), but lacks the charm Mikl Thor brings to those flicks of the previous two years. It does still center around a Canadian rock band.

                            Band of Robbers (2015)

"How is it racist to want to be more like another race?"

Alright (not great) reworking of Tom and Huck stories in modern world. Not too exacting on the story parallels.

Oh? Is that in the BD box set? I want to get that some day, but I won't be in a hurry now that I've re-watched them all.

                            • Dunno, I don't have the set. I got 7 from Netflix on its own and the disc had some modest bonus features, of which the making-of was a part.

In it, the cast emphasizes how incredible it was to make an American film in the immediate post-Soviet Russia, filming and recording at famous places and even getting renowned circus performers in the one scene. George Gaines himself was descended from Russians.

They only had one real issue, when the military showed up because the radios the crew was using were crossing into the military's signals so the soldiers investigated. They refused to believe it was just a film until Michael Winslow started doing his oral sound effects, at which point the soldiers lost their shit and fangasmed.

                              • Oklahoma City (2017)

“And someone said 'it's April 19.' Immediately it hit me. This is about Waco."

Pretty good documentary on the bombing and the events leading up to it.

                                Red Sparrow (2018)

                                "Are you a patriot?
                                -No.
Why do you do what you do?
                                -It beats selling tires.
                                Have you ever sold tires?
                                -No."

Did like. Kept me guessing. Jennifer Lawrence is an injured ballerina who is pressured into a mission for modern Russian intelligence and then forced to become a seductress to lure in a CIA agent (Joel Edgerton).
