Margot Robbie stated its not a sequel or even a remake. I think wb is pretending the first one never existed hence why they wont do a ayer cut

It's a sequel in the same way every DCEU movie has been related. People involved can say it's not all they want, but that doesn't change relality. It's a follow up to Birds of Prey, which itself was a follow up to Suicide Squad, plus it's within the same sub franchise as Suicide Squad with the same actors in the same roles doing the same thing. It's a sequel. More so than many.

Hell, just off these connections alone, it's more of a sequel than 3 out of the 4 Die Hard sequels. More of a sequel than 2 out of 4 Highlander sequels. More of a sequel than 2 of the 4 Starahip Troopers sequels. More of a sequel than any of the 4 Dragonheart sequels. And the list goes on and on. Just because they want to distance themselves from the first film, that doesn't make it not a sequel. The powers that be behind Highlander can disown the first sequel all they want, but it's still Highlander 2. Plain and simple.

Calling a sequel it's own thing doesn't negate the fact that it's still a sequel.

      • Hercules and the Amazon Women (1994)

"Ooh, understand women? Who can understand them?!"

Reading the Herc section of Hamilton's book put me in the mood for some of those movies. I saw that the TV movies (that eventually became the series, which in turn spun off a few more series including Xena) were free on Tubi. They're pretty fun and include Anthony Quinn as Zeus.

        • A very dialog heavy dramedy that feels a bit rushed and ultimately fails to tell a full story.

It focuses on two little league coaches with different approaches, rather than any of the kids or their families, as similar films do. Apparently this is because it was originally written as a two man play, and for that I think it works. It very much felt like a two man show, so I had to check to see if it was, and yep. As such, I'd say it does what it means to do well enough, but as a film it just seems a bit lacking.

I would be interested in seeing it performed live as originally intended, though.

            • The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)

"Will you take off that bonnet!?"

Really does deserve its praise. Sets were good, costumes were perhaps a little cliched for the Merry Men but otherwise were good for most characters (Marian had some beautiful dresses), and the acting was entertaining (I always enjoy how characters poke fun at each other). Sword fights and archery was good but some of the scenes were indeed silly (five dozen dudes dropping and swinging out of the trees onto a mass of trained soldiers that can't fight back? Really?).

Maybe I'm crazy, but Rathbone as Sir Guy of Gisbourne was so damn good that I kind of wanted a stronger triangle between him, Marian, and Robin. Have him play on her Norman side and rationalize how they're treating Saxons, that Robin may be noble and helpful but is ultimately deluded. Would have been great material.

And Claude Rains looked like a kid playing Prince John. And my dad kept joking how Robin has perfectly-curled hair while living in the woods like a bum. And we think Ernest Borgnine was the assassin sent after Richard (I don't feel like checking).

Definitely going to have to get this for my collection.

40th anniversary. Hadn't seen it since I think I rented the tape.

                • No where near as good as the first, but still a fun action romp.

                    • Watched African Queen this weekend. Great movie, but there are some very odd musical choices in it, musical cues that seem out of place given what's happening. Like when the two of them board the African Queen the first time, there is this very ominous sounding music for no apparent reason.

The writer, James Agee, was a brilliant man who was unfortunately also an alcoholic and a chain smoker, and he died of a heart attack at 45. He wrote Night of the Hunter too.

Pretty fun fan short (27 min) film about the 2000 AD character that is free on Youtube and elsewhere. Yes, Dredd appears too.

I picked up a book about that film at an antique place a couple years ago. Haven't gotten to it yet, but I like the movie enough to want to read a book on it.
