Mostly, I only celebrate milestone anniversaries for movies, but in the case of Star Trek and Ed Wood's top two, I watch every year.

Picked up the Kino blu ray for this, which is cool. Includes a commentary with the writer and an interview with the main actor. And, while in the mood, I re-watched the Riff.

More Star Trek. Roddenberry also tried to sign Jack Lord to play Kirk but couldn't reach an agreement. Every time I've seen Lord in something besides Hawaii Five-O, I've been impressed by his acting. But I suspect he'd have played Kirk in the same stiff and imperious way he played Steve McGarrett, and that wouldn't have been good.

Sorry, I lost access to the login function of the site on my iPad after the board was upgraded, and didn't bother to login on my computer until now, seeing as the semester is over and I have no more homework to do for a while. So yeah, I'll still pop in on PC or laptop from time to time going forward, but I can only read the board on my iPad, and that's what I use for pretty much all of my random internet interactions, so yeah. (This is actually the same reason I stopped posting on the Highlander-Community message board that Andrew NBD runs, too -- it just stopped letting me login.)

Anyway, here's some of the stuff I've watched lately.




A truly great film; the first two hours were a solid detective movie, and the final hour was a well executed superhero action flick. I was a little apprehensive about all the allusions to Hush, and was worried about a character switcheroo, a la the Batman Hush animated film, but all that worry was for naught. Should be interesting if they decide to use Hush in the sequel, though -- and it would be nice to finally have an accurate portrayal of such somewhere other than in the comic books (Gotham tried to fix their mess of a cameo from season one by bringing Tommy back in the later seasons, but obviously they never went far enough to even really touch on his Hush persona).




A surprisingly awesome sci-fi disaster film; this ws like Armageddon and Mission to Mars had a baby that grew up to be obsessed with 2012. It's absolutely bonkers, but way more intelligent than I think anyone could have expected from Roland Emmerich at this point in his career.




Fairly typical of the Scream sequels; it's good if you like them, probably not if not, I quite appreciated the functional callbacks to the first film, though eventually they did get a bit eye-rolling. The real standout here was the de-aging of a certain someone. Pretty impressive that.




Kind of randomly rewatched this one. It's almost a perfect dramedy, and being set in Nazi Germany, that is no small feat. This reviewing may have solidifed it as my favorite comedy, but I can't be certain with how indecisive I am at times.




I've been watching a lot of JAG recently, and sort of clicked play on this 'just because'. It's a great drama, though, always at the top of my list. I was kind of surprised during this viewing, however, as I noticed that Captain West (the JAG who ignore's Demi Moore's request for the case and assigns Tom Cruise to it instead) is actually played by the same guy who plays Admiral Chegwidden in JAG (the guy who runs the JAG office that is at the center of the TV show). It made me smile noticing that. Who knew a movie I've seen a dozen times could still surprise me? Go figure.

Not as good as the first, but certainly more grounded within the fantasy of the games instead of reality. It's a lot of fun, but I feel like there was something missing from the finale. Also the credits tease for 3 is pretty eye-rolling. I can only imagine how the next installment will play out, but it's either going to be really funny or terribly over-serious.

Stupid fun and entirely silly cop movies lampooning the ridiculousness of both 90's television and the current state of Hollywood productions. Both films are at their best when they're hanging lanterns on the lack of originality within their plots and executions, and the finale of 22 is one of the best comedic endings ever.

As I often say, I was always fascinated with Fantasy as a child, but it was this movie that made it my favorite genre. Surprisingly, I discovered that my stepmother -- who is obsessed with Lord of the Rings (books and films) -- had never seen this (or the next entry), and so I had to set up a familial double feature to get her to see them.

Another fantastic hallmark of the Fantasy genre, it's always fun to watch. I'm super excited for the Disney+ sequel show coming in November.

Yeah, much better than 3. I don't think I've ever rewatched 4 (despite owning it), so I can't really say if its better than that one. I'll need to give all 5 a rewatch sometime if I would want to really rank them. I don't hate any of them, though, so it's not like that'll be hard. Perhaps I'll make it the selection for my annual horror marathon this Halloween.

Absolutely fantastic sequel. There's a little bit of unnecessary fluff for the sake of call backs, but for the most part it's a very solid follow up that perfectly hits all the emotional notes it needs to in order to sell the story. Definitely worth seeing if you like the original, or just enjoy incredible aerial stunts and/or dog fights.

Excellent movie from Carol Reed. As Cuba teeters on revolution, a down-on-his-luck vaccum seller (Guinness) seeking to give his daughter the good life is approached by MI6 (Noel Coward) to spy for the UK. Having nothing to tell, his German friend (Burl Ives) advises him to make stuff up, which works well until he gets too much attention. A lot of it reads like a comedy, but it gets dark. Maureen O'Hara co-stars as the assigned secretary.

A clear stepping stone feature, despite an interesting concept, a couple of fun set pieces, and a few great visual moments, the whole thing just feels like very little actually happened. Granted the little that did happen was vastly important, specifically in regards to Dumbledore and Grindlewald's relationship, but there was just so little actually going on that it felt like this entire film could've been told in 30 minutes, rather than the 2 hours and 24 minutes it got. It's not bad, mind you, its just not particularly amazing in any way. Ultimately, I'm glad I waited to see this on HBOmax rather than paying for a movie ticket, but I was also entertained throughout most of it, so it wasn't a waste of time.

I don't think there will be a part 4, so that's that. Probably in 8 years there will be J.K. Rowling adult Harry books and there'll be a new trilogy. I don't think "Cursed Child" will be made into anything.
