  • Moth (2017)

    "F*ck off"

Yes, that's an actual line from the movie AND what I also said at the end. Anyone associated with the production/filming/acting/distribution of this film should have multiple lawsuits issued against them. This film is a joke. And whoever watches it is the punchline.

See, it's thinly disguised as one of those "found footage" trips to go find a man-creature called the moth somewhere in Europe. When you peel away the disguise during the last 5 minutes of the film, you realize it's a joke movie about a joke being played on an innocent man who accidentally ends up dead. Normally, you guys know I never give spoilers, but in this case, I'm telling you straight up there is no Moth man. The whole movie is a farce, not just for the actual story line, but for also pretending to be a horror movie. Whoever thought this whole idiotic idea was ok to go ahead and film is in dire need of a lobotomy.

—[Watched 1-31-23.] Weirder than Donnie Darko, but not as good, imho. Found it worth the watch, but didn’t wow me like that movie by the same director. At first it seemed like it was going to be all Bush-era left-wing paranoia, but they mock the Marxists almost as much as the fascist-leaning state powers.

            Monsterland 2 (2019)

I'll be damned if I can understand whatever the hell was going on in this movie, but it sure kept me interested. Near as I can tell it was a few little stories viewed by the same guy in a theater while some kind of monster apocalypse was going on around him. And there are some seriously trippy pieces being shown on screen. Perhaps if I were an LDS (Kirk joke) addict, I could explain it to you, but really, I can't. It definitely kept my attention, though. Maybe there was some kind of hypnotic element (like backwards messaging) that made me stare at the screen for the duration. One thing I can definitely tell you- this is not your average horror movie. See it for yourself.

The second one was a little more straightforward if I can even use that expression; more or less an anthology of horror shorts that kind of end abruptly with no real sense of conclusion. Not as trippy as #1, maybe a tad more scarier on the horror meter, and there isn't a common thread like the first where there was the one guy viewing all these shorts. Still held up to standards, though. Most definitely recommend watching them in order so you can see the difference.

—Saw the proof-of-concept cut of this at GFest several years ago. At only an hour and free on Tubi, it’s a minor investment though not much happens. There is a giant Buddha statue that walks across part of Japan (in a meta reference to a lost movie from 1934 and a slightly older legend).

              • Watched the new Matilda musical movie on Netflix, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

In a funny note, though, saw Emma Thompson in the opening credits, said, "I wonder who she's playing", watched the entire thing, then thought, "Wait, I thought Emma Thompson was in this", looked it up and thought, "Whaaaaaat!?, really?!" Whoever did that makeup deserves some kind of award.

I remember seeing this when it first came out. Still have the VHS I believe. To look at Fraser then and now is such a sad thing because I really like him as an actor and humanitarian. You can tell he's been through some serious issues in life. At least he's still killing it on the Doom Patrol.

The gas mask scene was unnerving.

It's a very good movie, but largely depressing. I guess any movie that's going to focus on the mental decline and suicide of an artist is going to be. But it also intrigued me to see it again (for the first time in years). I've seen Whale's 4 horror flicks, but now I'd like to see his Showboat and two war films.

Fraser was basically blacklisted for years after accusing the former president of the Hollywood Foreign Press of sex abuse.

                          • Darkness Falls (2003)

Looked kind of interesting from SC's post and I am getting Hella tired of watching movies made on a $17 dollar budget over at Tubi, so I took a chance. It was a decent movie. Nothing really special about it, but it had an interesting premise with the Witch thing and the 2 guys that suffered from the same thing. And then there's the small town mentality, i.e. the townspeople ready to burn down the house in Frankenstien (1931). Do have to say the effects were kind of subpar. There were times it literally looked like a kite being flown in the dark. Gave me a bit of a chuckle.

                            The Lair (2022)

Made by the same guy who did the original The Descent, I guess this movie was a sort of "return to grace" as most of his post-Descent offerings have been duds (not that I ever followed him or the movies- just a basic feeling I picked up on wiki when reading the article for this movie). I would definitely say this was the movie to return to grace with. The best Aliens since Aliens (1986). So, you would be familiar with the layout and the flow, and the story line might seem a little boring, but this movie dresses it up like a fairy godmother.

The cast is great, the antagonists are great, and the whole US vs USSR angle was clever, too, although getting kind of overdone, but it still works. And I finally found a movie with an ending I like!

Yep, that's how I'd say it too. The ideas could've made for a really good movie, but instead ended mediocre. They also seem to clash; i.e. they could've done the tooth fairy thing or the dark-only thing without combining them. IIRC, there's a much cooler design for the ghost that they scrapped.
