  • The Winding Stream: (2014)

"You can say 'the Carter Family' to people and they just look at you with a blank stare, but if you sing a couple of the songs ... they immediately go 'oh.' It's just American."

    Hellraiser: Judgment (2018)

"What on Earth is this place?
    -It isn't."

Pretty different, but probably no more so than some of those late sequels. They really seem to want to fit the Cenobites into a more biblical cosmology.

    • Incredibles II was just as good as the first. Could’ve used a teensy bit more Edna though

"John, it's really hard to be your sponsor."

        Coco (2017)

"Well, I don't know - I thought it might have been one of those made-up things adults tell kids! Like vitamins.
-Miguel, vitamins are a real thing!
Well, now I'm thinking maybe they could be."

I liked (not totally loved) this one. I'd rather they do original stuff like this than more Cars sequels.

Good. I hope to see it next week. When I'm asked the best comic book movie (which I assume means adapting a comic book property), I waver some, but when asked the best superhero movie, I just say The Incredibles. Sadly, it's basically the best cinematic representation of the Fantastic Four too.

Not as bad as I was expecting, but still pointless when compared to [Rec]. I wish the system would try harder to distribute foreign films here instead of remaking them in English even dubs would be better.

              • Green Street 3: Never Back Down (2013)

"Come see me when you've sobered up."

Netflix called this this Green Street Hooligans: Underground, so I just watched it because it was a Scott Adkins film, not knowing (but starting to suspect as I watched) it was a sequel.

                Godzilla vs. Mothra (1992)

"Oh, no; they're getting pissed off!"

                Strike Commando (1987)

"Farther Francois told me about a wonderful place where Mickey Mouse and Donal Duck live."

So so for an Italian rip-off* actioner. Mostly watchable (if it is) for the laughably OTT violence (multiple people get blown up, one of which manages to still be yelling "Americanski!" after his body is in multiple pieces). There's a VHS rip on Youtube.

*Mostly of Rambo 2, but with a dash of MIA). It's so blatant that they even do the electrified bed frame and the hero popping out of the water firing his M60.

Still waiting. I just hope your take away wasn't "meh." Even if it was "wtf," which is a valid reaction to the real Gone in 60 Seconds.

                • Pretty fantastic, might even love it as just as much as the first. It's hilarious, especially the Jack-Jack bits, I enjoyed how unpredictable his powers were, and the action might just be the best I've seen in any superhero film this year. It's also amazing, how much the animation has improved / evolved in the fourteen years since the first. The movie looks so good.

                  • MST3K: City Limits (1985/1992)

"I guess you could call this Cheesey Rider."

                    Dogs (1976)

                    "I can't find my roommate.
                    -Your roommate? Who's your roommate?
                    Howard Caplan.
-Howard? The fat boy, you mean?
                    Yeah, he was hungry."

                    The H-Man (1958)

"If man perishes from the face of the Earth, due to the effects of hydrogen bombing, it is possible that the next ruler of our planet may be The H-Man."

All Souls Day: Dia de los Muertos (2005)

                    "That is pretty freaky deaky."

Alright. Had good cameos and the effects were decent.

                    • Gone in 60 Seconds (1974)

                      "I burned it."

Space Cop alerted me to this forgotten classic and I just had to check it out. Grabbing the Blu-ray for a very nice price on eBay, I impatiently awaited its arrival and was not disappointed with the final product.

Maindrian Pace (never heard a name like that before), played by the writer-director-producer-madman himself (H.B. "Tony" Halicki) is the head of a very talented gang of car thieves, running an auto shop and helping the cops/insurance companies out with investigations from time to time. He's hired by a Colombian drug lord (probably; dude's loaded as fuck) to steal a whopping 48 four-wheeled beauties, so he rolls up his sleeves and gets to work.

I have to say that this film is one of the best car porn flicks I've ever seen. All the shit that Pace & Co. steal run the range: limos, Rolls-Royces, pimp car, Ford Bronco, a semi, a freakin' Manta! Of course, the Mustang is the one that gives him the most trouble, resulting in a truly stunning and lengthy chase and showing some damn fine wrecks. I also like how they got the cops, paramedics, and even Carson's mayor to play themselves!

One thing I noticed right away was the lineup of sunglasses on the dashboard, which I remember Quentin Tarantino doing a tribute to it in Kill Bill, Vol. I. (Pretty sure that was it).

I have to say aside from the Hungry Tiger and epic chase, one of the best parts was in fact the almost-caught drug scene. It's such a hilarious surprise and then they panic like headless chickens trying to divert the detective's attention. I got a good laugh at all that, and again when he disposes of the entire vehicle in a "not fucking worth it" manner.

The iconic jump was sweet, set up just right, and I'm now glad the Cage version came up with its own take on it (wouldn't have blamed them if they'd copied it, though). As for the ending, it gave me and my dad a good laugh, just hysterical coincidence screwing that one dude over.

We both were scratching our heads at the jalopy with the six black kids in it, just riding around smoking the reefer and having some beer, talking about this party or another and some random girl they all liked. My dad kept insisting some dumb shit was going to happen to them, and it sort of does, but then they keep cruising and show up a second time. I chuckled when I realized their engine had caught fire.

Overall a stunning work, and something I've got to watch the extras of (there aren't a whole lot there, so it shouldn't take me too long to get through).

                      Highly recommend.

                      • Tremors [6]: A Cold Day in Hell (2018)

                        "Gravity always wins."

As fun as these direct-to-disc sequels can be. This one, at least, returned to the smaller scale of a handful of people trapped by a handful of graboids.

                        Jeepers Creepers 3 (2017)

                        "It's ancient."

Not great and probably shows the Creeper too much (lessening the mystique), but worth the watch. Oh, and the truck is ridiculous in this.

                        The Incredibles (2004)

"You keep trying to pick a fight, but I'm still just happy you're alive."

Wanted to see this again before going to the sequel (hopefully this week). I just realized the movie takes place in the early 60s, but an alternate timeline where PCs and GPS exist too. The clues are right in the movie and some online research confirms the main story is in 1962.

                        An alright animals-attack flick.

                        Acts of Vengeance (2017)

"Within days after I stopped talking, my sense of hearing had drastically improved. You see? Good things do happen when you shut the f**k up for a minute or two."

A revenge flick starring Banderas that sets itself apart from the Death Wishes and such because the protagonist adopts stoicism and takes a vow of silence. Not the best of the type, but decent.

I love when he just sits in the Manta and rolls off. I guess it payed to film in the LA area, where they could find even unusual kit cars.

Yep. I think in the commentary they say Halicki really would keep multiple shades in his cars and he thought it would look good on film.

The 'Billy' car bit is weird. The DP does mention it on the commentary, but I don't remember much of an explanation beyond Halicki liked their ramblings and wanted to include more.

Glad you guys liked it. It's fun just to let people know the Cage movie is a remake.

                        • I caught my stepdad recently watching Acts of Vengeance and wondered about it. I specifically saw the part where he gets stabbed and has to use a book to cover the wound before reading the tome, which was Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, and plotting his revenge.

Had I not seen that scene, I wouldn't have then purchased a copy of the book for myself. Haven't gotten to it yet, I'm finishing up another thing, but I am fairly certain I'll cover it by year's end at the latest.

I read Aurelius in college (just for fun). It was pretty good. I wrote some quotes down from it in a book I keep for stuff like that.

                              • The Nice Guys (2016)

"Dad, there's like whores here and stuff.
-Sweetheart, how many times have I told you? Don't say 'and stuff.' Just say 'Dad, there are whores here.'"

Almost felt like a Coen brothers movie as a PI and a knock-around guy in 1977 LA investigate a missing lady and murders in the porn scene. Lot of good jokes and a lot of potential, but it tried a little too hard. Shane Black wrote and directed.

                                Coneheads (1993)

"May I have 55 words with you?"

                                Look What's Happened to Rosemary's Baby (1976)

"Will you lay off all this killing talk. We only got a couple more days out here, and you said we were going to meet Charlton Heston!"

Not quite as bad as I expected for a movie that should never have been made. I'd say it's like a weak Omen II.

                                It Waits (2005)

                                "My serve, motherf***er."

I can't exactly recommend this because it was only alright. Jeff would probably dig it because the killer was something between a cryptoid and a Native American demon. It follows the story of a fire watcher in the forest when strange crap starts going down.
