I didn't see a general thread for this so I have started one.
My general reactions are over all positive for most of what has been shown. Lots of good looking games lots of good information, at least from most there, more on that later.
Ubisoft did impress me with their conference. The lineup of titles were over all satisfying with very few titles I looked at and didn't have at least some desire to at least rent to give a try.
EA ... well its EA and I avoid EA like the plague most of the time. However ... Star Wars Battlefront ... I'm soooo tempted by that ... My dad will be interested in the EA sports titles but they are staples of his game collection.
Nintendo .. I'm a nintendo fan, I grew up on Nintendo, but this year ... They might as well have stayed home. The Wii U is the modern Dreamcast or CDI. There has not been a single I MUST BUY THAT game for that system to make me buy one and nothing at E3 shown to date has changed my mind on that point. EA and many other 3rd party publishers have abandoned Nintendo's hardware. It's under powered and so limited that the studios can't do the things they want to.
Now here comes the rant sorry.
Microsoft ... How can I put this ... Before the Xbox One was announced I was interested in what Microsoft was going to put out. I had plans on buying it. Then came the reveal, All Tv and Movie talk no games. Then came the Wired article that said "Always Online, No Used/Borrowed/Rented games." Let me be very clear, on a dollar level that doesn't affect me much as most know I'm flush money wise.
However, lets look at this realistically. Given the mandatory 24 hour server ping requirement that automatically precludes people who live in rural communities from being able to buy and use this device. This blocks deployed members of our armed service from using this device at camps and bases in the field, or on naval ships and subs. So generally speaking Microsoft is saying, If you are low income or live in areas where you can't get broadband internet connections we don't want you as customers.
When Xbox Exec Don Mattrick was directly asked about this issue .. this was his "Solution" for those type of customers.
Seriously ... that is a Fuck Off to "The Unworthy" as far as I am concerned.
I have to admit other things also bothered me. Kinect being mandatory for the console to even function ticked me off. I'm a very private person. I do not own a webcam. The webcams in my laptops have been disabled and the drivers uninstalled. I admit yes I'm paranoid on that issue. So for someone like me to be told that a Camera is mandatory for something I wish to buy, that I can't disable it and that it must always be online... that is a deal breaker at least for me.
Microsoft did lose me as a potential customer and from what I am hearing losing thousands if not hundreds of thousands of others, either because of this corporate snobbery or the DRM and Online requirements.
All this DRM and Restrictions are your's for only One Easy Payment Of $499
Moving On ..
Sony, I had to say the least, a moment of teary eyed fangasm, at the Sony conference. Not for the PS4 which I will get into momentarily but ... KINGDOM HEARTS 3 ... OMG I have been waiting for this game for I don't know how many years. Yes I admit when I saw that teaser .. I jumped to my feet then kissed my computer screen (watching Gametrailers.com feed).
Ahem .. now Sony One .. err Won the console war this cycle. Their lineup of games, both 1st and 3rd party, their hardware (which I will list below) and their policies all screamed, We Know Our Customers, We Like Our Customers, We Want To Keep Our Customers, And Take All Of Microsoft's.
Sony has, currently more Exclusives for the PS4 than Microsoft, including games from Bungie the company that basically Made Xbox relevant to begin with, with Halo. Over all PS4's over all launch catalogue is larger than what is coming for Xbox One by nearly dozen games including multiplatforms, exclusives, and 1st party products.
Also No restriction on Disk Based New/Used/Rented/Borrowed games. Unlike Microsoft they are not placing in the PS4 hardware or software any system by which a game new or used would be blocked from being playable by the machine itself. Now publishers might on their discs, but not if their smart after having seen the backlash Microsoft is getting.
Now lets get into the meat here.
I can not find a actually hardware breakdown of the Xbox One beyond a few vague statements made by Xbox exec's... 8gb DDR3 (off the shelf) ram and to quote their revel from a few weeks ago "5 Trillion Transistors" whatever the fuck that means. Seriously I'm a tech geek. That comment means NOTHING. It might be a nice buzz statement for media and the less than tech savvy but um for me ... its a joke. The best I have been able to find is that the Xbox One will have a Custom 8 core CPU designed solely for the system.
Now here are the specs Sony released.
Main processor
Single-chip custom processor
CPU: low power x86-64 AMD “Jaguar”, 8 cores
GPU: 1.84 TFLOPS, AMD Radeon™ Graphics Core Next engine
Memory GDDR5 8GB
Hard Disk Drive Built-in (reported to be 500gb)
Optical Drive (Read only)
BD 6xCAV
DVD 8xCAV
I/O Super-Speed USB (USB 3.0), AUX
Communication
Ethernet (10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T)
IEEE 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth® 2.1 (EDR)
AV output
HDMI
Analog-AV out
Digital Output (optical)
For a tech geek like me this gets me sticky panties I'll tell you... ONE TERAFLOP GPU .. to put that into a prospective most people can handle, to get 1tf of computer power you would need 500 2ghz dual core processors. 8gb GDDR5 Ram ... OMG ... that's like another heroin injection ... That's a grand worth of ram off the shelf IF you can find it. GDDR5 is the fastest ram currently commercially available. It makes the stock DDR3 Microsoft is using look like a snail racing a Ferrari, and this whole thing is X86 architecture. Technically speaking, if you could find a way to jail break this thing and remove the Sony OS.. this could be used as a Windows or Linux based gaming rig...
All for $399 ...
Yes I pre-ordered a PS4 as soon as it went up on Amazon. Yes I plan on playing the hell out of it.
The only thing about the PS4 I can even slightly complain about is that for multiplayer games you will need to be a paying member of the Playstation Plus service. That however isn't really much for me to complain about, $49.99 a year and that nets you not only online play but a collection of Free downloadable games many of which are AA and AAA titles, and you get free games Every Month you're a member yours to keep even if you leave the service.
So .. That's my reaction to E3 ... My thoughts on everything going on and why I have made the buying decision I have made.
Anyone else want to chime in?
