DC Universe Online initial discussion

I heard some time ago that a MMORPG (Massivly Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) was being developed for the DC comics universe. I havn't heard anything since the announcement that it was being developed. That announcement didn't even say which company was mkaing the game. Anyone have any updates on this or was it killed like so many other DCU related games have been in the past.

Hadn't heard that DC was, but I know I'd heard that Marvel was developing one, since that was the whole basis of their lawsuit against the makers of the "City of Heroes" MMORPG (where you could, if you customize a character properly, make them resemble Marvel superheroes).

I don't think the idea really appeals to me. As a MMORPG, obviously it's not going to let you play as Batman or Superman or Green Lantern or anything in a shared server with other players, so I don't really see the point.

Actually Green Lantern would be a available character I would think as there are supposed to be 3600 of them. Characters like Superman and the rest would be NPC's I would think at a justice league headquarters handing out missions (quests) for the players. Hal John Guy and Kyle would be on OA I would assume thats where I would start out new lvl 1 Green Lantern characters if I was developing the game.

If they let you be a Green Lantern, they wouldn't be letting you out there doing missions for the Corps across the cosmos or anything -- likely you'd be confined to a few available/explorable cities on Earth and possibly the moon... and when you'd end up seeing the hundreds of other players that want to be Green Lanterns running around on any given server, all assigned to Earth... that would just be a little silly.

A Green Lantern MMORPG could work, definitely, but it'd really need to be its own thing.

XBox 360 is to get an exclusive Marvel U game
and
PS3 is to get the exclusive DCU game (the only reason I would consider getting a PS3)

There was a tiny blurb about it in Wizard - it would be a Massive Multi-player DCU and Marvel game

Think EverQuest but on your PS3 - it would be a never ending game not like MUA or JLH

Ok Another theory.

It seems kinda convienient that the DC universe is getting a Bunch of new corps just in time for them to put them all in to an MMO. Gives them a ton of NPC baddies in the form of Red, Yellow, Orange and Black, if the time line for the game and comics meet close enough. and gives them a near endless supply of Lanterns for players to be and classes,
Green-Tank: energy constucts and will power allows these lanterns to soak up damge and keep standing long after others would have fallen.
Blue- Leader: using Hope and spirit to inspire others around them these Heroic lanterns meet evil head on and act as a beacon of hope.
Violet- Support : using Love the violet lanterns bring out the best in others they use there powers to both bolster and uplift there team mates.
Indigo - Healers: Compassion burns brightly in an indigo they use there light to sooth and heal the beings of the universe.

it would be a smart way to add more options to a MMO to use these i just HOPE that they really where not just made for this reason.

I cant hold out high hopes just yet, biggest because how are they going to make a ring-bearer actually a viable player? They are going to have to limit him, and if you think about it, he/she would be like a SuperTank/Healer/Buffer etc from hell .

And even more, can you imagine how long it's gonna take someone to level up to a point where they could use their power ring for more than a Flash light, lol.

Mebbe I'm giving it too much thought.

I look at it more like COH really depending on there lvling system i can see it done really easy

yes there will be some limiting on the power from the comic but that happends in any game for balance.

Im just wondering how there going to have other heros that are NOT lanterns. i can see how the lanterns open a huge range of heros. but how are they going do to the normal heros. Coh got away with the Create a hero system cause they have very little in the way of lore. In a DC game almost any hero you try to make is gonna copy or be damn close to a copy of an exsiting hero. At least the lanterns let you make a hero with less chance of persecution over copying.

Now they could do something amazingly ground breaking and let players play cannon charicters. they have mentioned that they are going to involve the MULTIVERSE in the game so there could me muliple supermen. but that opens up a really different can of worms. right now ill just keep pndering but i love to hear others thoughts

Actually... I doubt you'll be able to be any kind of Lantern when DCUO first comes out... that said, I'm sure that there will be a nice GL expansion later on that allows you to be every kind of Lantern, good and bad... in fact, I'm willing to bet money that this is how it ends up.
