This movie came out on a bad weekend for a lot of people. I would've loved to have seen it Thursday, Friday or last night, but I couldn't. Nor can I see it tonight. But I'm not under any obligation to see it. WB decided to make it & pour money into it, I didn't invest in the production.Originally posted by Lantern54 View PostYet we have members here who have yet to go out and support it. I've seen it twice and Superlantern attended his third showing today. It amazes me that we've had this release date set in stone for a long time and some members here couldn't clear their schedule for 2 hours...2 measly hours!
I was never interested in this being a film "franchise". That's why I think they should have shot their load with this film : one long film that goes deeper. I really don't want to see a sequel, they tend to suck. And the producers keep talking abt the "fall of Hal Jordan". There is no "fall" of Hal Jordan, just a crummy mistake made by the editors of DC in the crap 1990's when they ran out of good ideas & refused to improve their working terms for writers & artists & got stuck with a lot of untalented hacks. The only reason we have a GL movie is that Geoff Johns successfully wiped that crap off the table & rebooted the whole thing. Why go back & base a movie on that garbage?
I'm sure I'll enjoy the film -- when I have the time to see it with friends. But I don't really care if it tanks or critics hate it or people don't go to see it. GL has been here, in this form, since 1959 & it will be here long after the H-wood version.
Bring on the tv series! It's a way better idea than a movie "franchise."

Just a few weeks ago you were excited for it but now you couldn't care less about it? Sure sounds like you're trying to convince yourself.Originally posted by Medphyll View PostThis movie came out on a bad weekend for a lot of people. I do not have a job going to the cinema is a luxury I cannot afford to go more than once i will have to go and see it Wednesday as it is 2 for 1 you do not know my economical position at all.Originally posted by Lantern54 View PostI have a job, please don't use this as an excuse. I attended a graduation yesterday and had a ton of crap to do last night and I still was able to wiggle a showing in between. If people wanted to see it bad enough they would have made it happen.
Thanks JohnOriginally posted by InterestingJohn View PostHe said he doesn't have a job. Which is a very legitimate excuse.

My mistake, I thought I read "some of us have jobs." I apologize and of course that is a valid excuse. I misread what you wrote.Originally posted by The-british-lantern View PostI do not have a job going to the cinema is a luxury I cannot afford to go more than once i will have to go and see it Wednesday as it is 2 for 1 you do not know my economical position at all.

WTF are you talking about?!?! "convince" myself of what??Originally posted by Lantern54 View PostJust a few weeks ago you were excited for it but now you couldn't care less about it? Sure sounds like you're trying to convince yourself.
I'm still excited to see the movie. I just don't care if it's "successful" or not. Sequels mean nothing to me; other people's opinions mean nothing to me; critic's opinions mean nothing to me. Period.
Find an earlier post where I say different. I've said the same things all along.
1. Movie, cool, I'll see it but in the vernacular of our time "whatever"
2. DVD animated: nice, but nothing more than a neat treat
3. TV series in Clone Wars style: awesome. Better idea than a films series. Count me in!!
The comic book is what I care about. I'm more pissed that I haven't had time to read comics lately than not being able to see the movie the second it was released.

The worst case scenario with this movie is that it wont make enough money for a sequel. When do we consider this hopefull franchise dead in the water?

i think itll still be able to make money. dont forget we are officially 48 hours from it being just released.
and if a sequal does happen have geoff johns alone do the script and get john faveru to direct.
keep the original cast and dont rush it.................................................. ..........................

We all admit that there are some serious misteps made with this film and can live with that. But sure would be sad if it won't get a chance at redemption ......that would really sting.Last edited by SmurfLantern; 06-20-2011, 01:34 AM.

I went to see the morning on Saturday morning. I could count the number of people in the theater on my fingers and toes. I thought it was pretty sad to see so many empty seats.
As for the critics and bad press... I'm sure it influence people sitting on the fence whether to see the movie or not. However, it can't be all their fault. Star Wars: Episode One - The Phantom Menace was widely panned by critics before the release of the film and still made $66.9 million when ticket prices were cheaper and there wasn't 3D screenings. Moreover, it hit $200 million in 13 days.
The ugly truth might be that Green Lantern is still a second tier super hero by the general public. I mean, the average joe could probably tell you about the Joker and Lex Luthor and not much about Hal Jordon and his arch nemesis. You just witnessed the strength of geek knowledge. I agree about the bad press, though comparing it to Phantom Menace is tough. The reviews for Phantom Menace were not as bad as Green Lantern, Phantom Menace had like 15 years of anticipation going for it built up on the love for the original trilogy, plus Lucas basically strong armed theatres into playing it for a certain amount of time, in the biggest theatre, etc, so it was destined to make tons of money regardless.
That being said, like I mentioned before, Green Lantern was only expected to do close to 55 million BEFORE the deluge of bad reviews, so if it makes around 52 million even with all the bad press, it really didn't under perform much at all. Now we can probably go back again and revisit if the movie would have been served with a slow but steady marketing campaign with a strong final push as opposed to essentially nothing until the Wonder Con footage then an all out blitz, which some in the media clearly viewed as desperate."My mind is deluged with thoughts of Heaven and Hell,
Crime and Punishment, Damnation and Redemption. Hal
Jordan... And The Spectre.
I'm dead, yet I live. I have no identity. Yet I know
who I am. And once again I've been given power enough
to change the world. This time, Lord...
Let me be worthy."
