  • The Bride of Frankenstein (1935)

I'll give a full review in the Classic Horror thread tomorrow, since it's a little late right now and I want to mull over some of my thoughts before putting everything out.

    • Sharkwater (2006)

"I think the world needs to know that sharks are probably the most threatened group of species that we have in the ocean right now."

Very political and now dated, but still interesting.

      Phantom of the Opera (1998)

"I wanted to tell you, your voice fills my heart with divine light."

Dario Argento's rather bizarre stab at the traditional story, which in this case includes a Turkish bath house, rats with mind powers (who also seem to get involved with Sands' Phantom's self pleasure), and a steampunk rat catcher with a dwarf sidekick. Can only recommend to someone trying to see every Argento movie (of which it is not typical) or someone looking for something weird.

        • MST3K: Track of the Moon Beast (1976/1999)

"We can go back to my place. I've got all kinds of antiseptics there!
          Dozens, no hundreds of antiseptics!
          -Your place?
          Yeah.
          I call it Antiseptic Manor."'

          MST3K: Devil Fish (1984/1998)

"The director's vision? Lots of shots of things."

          • Beauty and the Beast (2017)

"Turn back into a clock! Turn back into a clock!"

Excellently done. Really have to love the work they did with the castle (both its opulence and its decay, has this incredibly duality to it).

Luke Evans really sells himself as a massive, self-absorbed asshole, the perfect reincarnation of the Heartless Prince from the opening and the manifestation of the "beauty is only skin-deep" philosophy.

Both Watson and Stevens were good foils of each other, seeing their interplay recreated from the animated version was moving, performed so well by each of them (and it is good interplay to begin with!).

Another good pair of interplays: Ewan McGregor and Ian McKellen; and Gaston and LeFou.

Speaking of LeFou, he really was the breakout character here. He was the comic relief/sidekick/toady in the animated film, but here he gets the royal side character treatment, not just kissing up but actively enabling Gaston's increasingly-deadly narcissism. The whole time I thought it was Jack Black, because Josh Gad channels him like all hell, but I was pleasantly surprised by the end-credits reveal. Guy can act.

Overall a great update to a classic.

            • Darkest Hour - I enjoyed it. Oldman was great, as were some of the supporting performances. I do think the film looked a little drab though, and you could have called it "Big Speeches: The Movie". Still it was effective. - 7.5 / 10

              • Back to the Future: Part II (1989)

"The time-traveling is just too dangerous. Better that I devote myself to study the other great mystery of the universe: women!"

Ah, the far-off future of 2015, when everyone drives flying cars and eats re-hydrated pizza.

                The Cloverfield Paradox (2018)

"What are you talking about, arm?"

The first movie released this year that I've seen. The fam and I liked it more than I thought it would based on critical reception.

                      • John Wick (2014)

"Do I look civilized to you?"

                        John Wick 2 (2017)

"Somebody, please! Get this man a gun!"

Day of the Dead 2: Contagium (2005)

                        "The dead are getting up."

I wasn't expecting much of anything with this and that's what I got. So bad that at one point you can clearly see that the supposed local news van is actually a rented Ryder.

                        • My review of Phantom Thread. Honestly it might be one of the most perfect films of 2017.
