Cool!
He was in Ewell's Corps in the Army of Northern Virginia, huh? Not the best general. This is really interesting to hear.

He was captured really, really late in the war. From the sound of it, he was captured when the Army of Northern Virginia was attempting to link up with the Army of Tennessee. The Confederates couldn't defend Richmond (Confederate Capitol) anymore, because General Grant just kept on kept on throwing waves and waves and waves of men at them. Which, bloody as it was, I guess is what it really took to defeat Lee. In a last ditch effort, the Confederates tried to combine two (very spent, very tired) field armies and destroy the federal armies individually. That plan was very quickly snuffed out, and in the battle where the speaker in the video mentioned he was captured, when General Ewell surrendered. Their route towards the Tennessee force was cut off by the famous Federal General Sheridan. General Lee more or less realized there wasn't any hope moving forward after that. I believe Lee's words after Ewell's surrender were, "My god. Is my army dissolving?"
The speaker was referring specifically to the Battle of Sailor's Creek:

It's really interesting to hear someone who lived through that, when the world and way of living was sooooooooooo different.Last edited by Star-Lantern; 12-04-2018, 08:09 AM.
