  • How do YOU feel about free downloading ???

I don't download movies, music, and software, but I truly believe giving the fans a few free samples isn't a bad deal for the artist ... 20 to 30 second snippets of a song just doesn't get me in the groove ... I wish more artists would stream their work online ... I just wanna hear the entire song before I commit to spending my hardly earned cash on the cd ... Ya know ???

With MTV not playing any music (I was pretty sure they where Music Tele Vision, but I guess I was wrong) and the radio stations we have here which are crap - yeah I end up on the few occasions when I buy a CD buying based on like one song I caught somewhere and the rest of it sucking ass.

So I think perhaps putting a song or two from the new album on their site to stream or download is a good thing.

I fully support artists and writers getting paid for their work ... However, I refuse to put down $15 to $20 on a ten track cd unless I have heard and like more than 4 songs ... Springsteen pulled a smart move with his latest cd "Magic" ... There's a hidden track ... I like the entire cd, but the bonus untitled track is my personal favorite ...

For the record, I am currently an assistant manager for a cd / dvd chain ... I know the law ... I also know how cd sales are seriously slumping in sales ... Many cd retailers will NOT exist beyond the next year, unless they are willing to evolve with the tech times ...

I've faxed and emailed the major labels with my ideas ... I don't care if I get any kudos or thanks for my ideas either ...

      MY VISION OF THE FUTURE:

Music stores need to get rid of the actual cds ... They need to stock up on download stations, and burn stations instead ... If ya don't work for a major music retailer, then ya aren't aware of how much inventory is sent back via recall every year ... I'd love to go more into detail, but I simply can't tonite ... I can smell the kittens' tuna breath already, so I'm gonna hafta log off soon ...

All I have to say is that I wouldn't have even known about 90% of the music I listen to without Napster/other downloading programs. As it is, the Mindphaser forum has an FTP site where we share music. This is the only thing I download from anymore, but the library is massive. Stuff no one has heard of. And some simply awesome stuff at that. I don't listen to mainstream stuff because quite honestly, it doesn't hold a candle to the music I do listen to.

I hang out at these fine sites. I end up listening to a lot of crap, but I also get a lot of good stuff.

Have I downloaded things illegally? Yes I have. That makes me a thief. Pure and simple. Now I don't download all the damn time, or have very much that I have downloaded. I don't download comics or movies or programs or CDs... makes you wonder what I do download... and its not porn either. Makes you wonder what I do steal online... but I'd rather not say.

Why am I saying this at all. Because I wanted to make a point. It is theft, and what bothers me isn't so much the theft... its the bullshit excuses people tell themselves to justify it to themselves that what they're doing is, somehow, not wrong. If you steal things, reguardless of how you do, recognise that what you're doing is wrong, and don't whine about it if you get caught and punished.

No I'm not saying that I want you punished. Hell like I said I steal stuff online too, I sure as hell don't want to get caught, however when people DO get caught they whine about it like some grave injustice is being laid upon them, they act like martyrs like they've done nothing wrong.

If you're going to commit a crime, acknowledge that you are, and by all means do what you can to not get caught. But don't act persecuted by 'the man' or 'big corporations' if they catch you with your hand in the cookie jar. Take your fines like a man.

I just like to accept actions for what they are rather than trying to use justification to make one feel better about negative actions.

If that makes me macho, sure why not?
