Dark Knights Metal is an event that started with Kid Toyman building a Justice League Megazord to defeat Mongul. That sets a very specific baseline for the rest of the story.

I can barely ever remember Kid Toyman even exists, and I wish Mongul didn't, he means so little to me. As for Metal (main), I didn't read the whole thing (issues kept selling out), so I need to get the full series and give it a proper read, but what I do remember I liked well enough. I clearly recall the tie-ins for the various Metal Knights to be very good, though.

Yeah, those evil Multiverse Dark Knights were a terrible concept, but the execution was insanely good. On most of them.

Quote:
This August, Warren Ellis unites with artist Ramon Villalobos for an action-packed new era of WILDCATS. Following his genre-breaking work reintroducing beloved superheroes from the WildStorm Universe, Ellis and Villalobos will take the covert team on a new adventure in a six-issue miniseries beginning August 28.

“The first line I wrote down for WILDCATS was: ‘Saving the human race from the human race,’” says Ellis. “It’s a team made up of people who have seen the worst in everybody and everything, and yet still put themselves in frankly absurd amounts of jeopardy just so tomorrow might be a little bit better. And it’s a short series, so I might just kill them all. Come and see what happens. The art is great.”

“Warren has created something truly spectacular with the relaunch of the WildStorm universe over the past two years,” says DC Chief Creative Officer and Publisher Jim Lee. “There are few visionaries in our business and few still who can elevate mythos with such vitality and spectacle. Paired with Ramon’s extraordinary artwork, I’m thrilled for fans to check this out come August.”

From the pages of THE WILD STORM, the piratical covert team are here to stop humanity from destroying itself. The black-ops team featuring Grifter, Savant, John Colt and Adrianna Tereshkova have discovered that the secret space program Skywatch has been performing medical experiments on abducted innocents for decades. And now one of those experiments is about to explode—revealing a new threat and level of danger that no one could have prepared for. The covert team may have thought the world was strange before, but they had no idea—and now the stakes might just be too high.

“From the jump, WILDCATS has always represented to me the most modern and cutting-edge approach to superhero comics,” says Villalobos. “I’m excited for the opportunity to draw fun and fashionable comics for the coolest and smartest audiences in comics. WILDCATS has a heritage of genius creators who have worked on these characters, so it’s pretty cool to be able to awkwardly put my name among theirs.”

WILDCATS from Ellis and Villalobos will build on Ellis and Jon Davis-Hunt’s 24-issue series THE WILD STORM, which kicked off in 2016. The series will channel the same breakneck energy and imagination, creating a thrilling new story for fans of the WildStorm universe.

WILDCATS #1 is available on August 28. You can check out the main cover and variant cover here.
Cover by Jim Cheung and Tomeu Morey

Variant cover by Chris Burnham and Nathan Fairbairn

That's just as bland and boring as the Detective Comics logo.

Looks like something that would have come out in the late 80s or early 90s.

I'm pretty sure they did pick it out of a folder containing unused designs dating back decades.

All double-shipping books will go back to shipping once a month next year.

Should have been done a while ago, because paying full price for a standard-size issue twice a month is financially unsound.

It was a nice experiment, but one that went on far too long. The quality just wasn't there to justify 24 issues a year of a title.

With Batman it makes sense because they create the new Batman and Catwoman title. I expect the other books to gain new spinoff books as well.

From DC's viewpoint, they should WANT you to spend more money.

Hell, I'd publish Batman weekly.

I bet we see a new Superboy title or even something like a Superboys title featuring both Jon and Conner. Aquaman's already got the Mera spin-off title but if it's not doing well enough maybe we'll see DC get brave and legit try and do a JL Atlantis book.

DC needs a better plan to reintroduce some of their secondary and 3rd string characters, you can't just have a new event and throw a half dozen into the one story and hope readers get attached to one or two of them. Going back to single issues monthly opens up the opportunity to get more titles out there featuring the rest of the DCU that's taken a back seat with all of the mega events and world changing stuff happening. I'm hoping after this Leviathan story in the broader DCU the Question finally gets the solo series he's been missing since he's showing up in Bendis' Superman stuff. He's being featured as one of the world's greatest detectives alongside Plastic Man, Green Arrow, Batman, and Lois Lane during Leviathan after all and getting more exposure than he has in some time....

Superman: Leviathan Rising is really fun. Makes me want to dive into all the Superman books coming up (maybe excluding Supergirl)

That was just a mini, and it's wrapped months ago.

I wasn't aware it was a mini?! I saw she got that plus the DC Zoom book or whatever and just figured DC was pushing for more female leads. Still, I think a JL Atlantis book has more staying power than a lot of the shitty spin-offs they come up with.

Anybody else hoping Doomsday Clock fixes more in the broader DCU than just the JSA and the Legion?

From what I read of the Black Hammer stuff it was good. I think I talked about one of the spin-off minis before... Doctor Star? It was something of a mix of James Robinson's Starman and the silver age GL stuff.

Yea, Black Hammer has been fantastic. It's ridiculous how quickly Lemire was able to build a world that felt like it had a ton of depth and legacy to it.

Never heard of Black Hammer, but damn that is some good art by Scalera.

This is what happens when you let the best go to smaller publishers for their creative owned work. This is what happens when you don't entice your top DC creators to "first look" deals through Vertigo. This is what happens when you replace not one but TWO insanely respected editors and have nothing for years that anyone talks about.

Heck, Vertigo has been so low profile of late that I thought it already WAS gone.
