Can a man and a woman really be just friends (with no benefits)?

Your question falls short of When Harry Met Sally. There, Harry argued that sex would be in the way, but that doesn't mean they couldn't be friends. Two people can be friends with one or both of them being attracted to the other and never acting on it. That's obvious, just like you can have coworkers you work fine with without sleeping with them.
That said, I still say it's possible and I've know cases where men and women have friends and are both married to others with seemingly no problem.

I think you have several different options.
1. They both want to hump each other. Which means they probably should at some point.
2. One of them wants to hump the other one. Colloquially known as the friendzone. Some of these situations outlast an actual relationship.
3. None of them is the other one's type. There is no reason why that shouldn't work.
