Microsoft Just Gave Up On Its Xbox One DRM (Updating)

Quote:
Microsoft has caught a lot of heat for restricting the sale and trading of used games on Xbox One, and requiring the consoles to phone home every 24 hours for verification. Basically, for having hefty DRM. Well good news for whiners everywhere: Microsoft is giving up.
Giant Bomb is reporting that Microsoft intends to drop all its DRM for the Xbox One, and now an update to Microsoft's official Q&A on the console confirms that change is coming. What that change is exactly is still up for grabs; the link 404s.

Anonymous sources tell Giant Bomb that the reversal is going to be complete: no more 24-hour check-ins, used games will work just like they did on the 360, no region locking for games, all games will be playable offline. It's a big pivot, but considering Sony got a standing ovation at E3 for announcing just that, you can see why a back-pedal would be tempting.
So far, Microsoft's official stance has caused a ton of backlash, considering the requirements would not only eliminate the market for cheap used games (that neither Microsoft nor publishers make a profit off of) but also make the Xbox One no good for gamers who don't have consistent, high speed Internet. It didn't help that Microsof has been less than apologetic about it, and has done a particularly horrible job of explaining some of the benefits of the original DRM system.

It's clear we're about to see a change, and there's no doubt it's a move away from DRM, but we're still waiting for an official statement from Microsoft on the details of the change.
UPDATE: Here are the specifics from Microsoft.
Quote:
An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.

Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.

In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console there will be no regional restrictions

They must've seen that the PS4 was winning preorders 14:1 lol. It still is $100 and weaker, that still is a problem for me.

I knew it would get changed sooner or later, all it needed was firmware updates to do so, so they got it out of the way early.

LOL well after Sony smashed them with that DRM stuff at E3, I'm not surprised.

Doubt you will see a price drop since Kinect will keep the price up.

Too late. I'm not going to buy one. I don't trust them enough to invest in this new system regardless of how they backpeddle this particular week. How do I know what requirements they will put on the system in two years?

It's goddamn hilarious how Microsoft is backpedaling on the DRM and all.

This might make a difference to me. I don't know. I have both PS3 and and XBox 360 right now and I prefer the gaming experience on the latter a lot more.

Agreed. Though that $100 difference in price is still a problem for me.

I have both as well, and it really depends on the kind of game I'm playing. I like shooters and action games better on the Xbox 360 (though they're really superior on the PC), but like fighting games more on the PS3. I have definitely preferred the PS3's exclusives though. I'll probably end up owning all three consoles like I did last gen at some point, just not in a big hurry to do so.

i agree both systems have their strong suits for game genres.personally i prefer the 360 for sports with the exception of baseball as the mlb2k series is horrible, also prefer shooters on the 360 but that is because the only shooter i am decent at is halo , i find too much camping in the cod series. I felt the Xbone exclusives were more exciting then what sony showed.

LOL! Excellent.

If I end up getting one system, it would be the PS4. I don't like the idea of being forced to connect to the internet to be able to use the system.

I pretty much agree. I bought the last MK on PS3 for that reason. I got Arkham Asylum on PS3 solely because of the Joker DLC.

However, I played the Injustice demo on both systems and for some reason it felt and looked a little better on XBox to me so I got it on that.

This all is far too little too late. The general public, not the gamers who care, but the public. Have had several weeks of "Always Online, Won't Support Used Games, Watches You Jack Off Your Dog" that I don't think they are going to see a quick or steady PR or sales recovery from this flip flop. No console can survive on the Hard Core Gamer alone. They need the Average Joe to walk in once in awhile and buy their machines. Xbone has lost that for a while I believe.

Half of the general public doesn't even know what DRM is, let alone the stuff Xbox was planning. This will affect them on the gamer side, but the moms and dads of the world won't know any different.
