The non-marriage went over like a Santa Claus at an Eagles game, I won't dispute that, but I doubt that anyone at DC is losing sleep over it. Batman's supporting cast is on fire right now. Any random one-shot or variant cover with Harley or Joker draws interest. Harley has a highly-anticipated animated series coming out, Batman has a new animated movie seemingly every 6 months, and Joker has become WB's most profitable DC adaptation every. The appeal of the Dark Knight and his world never ceases to amaze me.

If Dan tells someone higher up than he is that that's no big deal, he'll be standing in line at the unemployment office the next day.

That IS a big deal.

It was a huge mistake. I'm not disputing that, but in the grand scheme of pop culture, Batman is still DC's cash cow. The loss of those readers is more than offset by Joker and Harley Quinn being more popular than they've ever been. Of the 50 best-selling comic books of the year so far, 12 of them are Batman-related. His corner of DC's universe is the one place where the company can pull a stunt like that and recover with no lasting damage.

^Lego Movie 2 had a couple references to the jilting. Lego Batman bemoaned the public not wanting him happy with someone else.

Oddly, offering the "fill in" mini series helped, as retailers upped their orders for that month. Doubtful the 2nd and 3rd issues will fare as well, but nice to see the temporary upswing.
