Terrible for The Rhythm Section. At least Gretel & Hansel seems to have been made on a dirt cheap budget. Great holds for most of the holdovers, though. If 1917 wins, it'll be the highest grossing best picture winner since Return of The King.

Congrats to The Rhythm Section. It finally broke Hoot's record for the worst opening weekend record for a movie in more than 3000 theaters. Also Little Woman's inching close to 100m.

Is it possible that moviegoers aren't dying to see movies that are written, directed by and starring women, and that show girls kicking ass? If I were a producer, I'd at least consider that possibility.

It's more likely that the lesson will be that R rated films from PG-13 franchises should be reserved for BD extended cuts, as they previously have been. They need to keep the ratings down if they started there in order to get the money from the kids (and the parents thereof) who are part of the audience they've built.

Fortunately they learned a lesson from the disaster of Green Lantern and kept the budget down, so it's going to earn a profit.

Which raises a point. The talk is always about how much a movie earns. But the real issue is how much it earns versus how much it cost to make and publicize.

no, I think the issue is that movies which are done that way aren't viewed as being GOOD....and of the limited number of movies that I know which have come out under those circumstances recently, I cant say I had *much* enthusiasm for'em (I mean, I'm _still_ gonna see BoP but I'm not rushing to the theater like I normally would....)

but that really has more to do with the property, rather than who stars/directs/produces it.
:/

Wow Call of The Wild pulling a bit of an upset over Sonic. If its budget hadn't been so high, it could have been a decent hit. The olds actually came out for Ford.

That's a bit off for Call of The Wild's initial estimated gross, sll that's a decent overperformance, considering tracking. Sonic manages to be #1 again thanks a much bigger Saturday surge.

Great for The Invisible Man. It looks to have had strong Friday night matinees. Also whoa at My Hero Academic, I didn't even remember that was being released the past week. Decent numbers for an anime movie, lol.

Meh at Onward. That's a really weak opening given its supposed budget, but it's also on par with tracking. On the plus side that's a pretty good drop for The Invisible Man, and Emma looks to be a sleeper hit for Focus.

Hopefully Onward has some good legs, because otherwise it's probably going to lose Disney a lot of money, since the overseas gross isn't looking good. At least The Invisible Man dropped less then 50%, which is an extremely solid hold. Also Bad Boys For Life passed 200m.

Dreadful numbers in general. That Onward drop, sheesh. It's safe to say that the box office is finally feeling the effects of the coronavirus.

Terrible weekend. All the holdovers in the top ten dropped 60% or higher. Onward is the lowest grossing #1 film in over a decade, and that's not counting inflation. Next weekend isn't going to get any better, either.
