Default Zatswan: Multiversal Guardian

I'm currently working on a new comic series titled Zatswan: Multiversal Guardian. It's similar to Green Lantern in several ways, but there are many differences.

The core concept is that there are 4th dimensional objects called tesseracts that, for some unknown reason, are existing in the 3rd dimension. There is an organization of Multiversal peacekeepers called Zatswan that use these tesseracts to fulfill their goals. Tesseracts are unlimited power sources and grant the Zatswan all kinds of abilities. In fact, one of the weaknesses of the Zatswan is that they can draw on too much power and burn themselves out, which is an inverse of Green Lantern's weakness of running out of power. The Zatswan aren't really sure if they are using the tesseracts for their intended purpose or not, however. The Zatswan come in different colors, and some excel at things that others don't. Like, yellows are better at certain things than reds, but worse at others, and so on.

As mentioned, the tesseracts come from the 4th dimension, and next to NOTHING is really known about that. There are signs of intelligence from the 4th dimension like tesseracts, but 4th dimensional beings do not interact with 3D ones in any way the 3D ones can perceive.

Going to a higher dimension is a MUCH bigger feat than going to a different universe. The Zatswan are able to travel from universe to universe by having their tesseracts envelop them and conceal them within contained 3D space. While inside the tesseracts, they momentarily cross into the 4th dimension, which the tesseracts can do, and from there, they are able to cross over into different universes. So, they sort of use the tesseracts as vessels. However, while crossing over into the 4th dimension, they can't perceive much.

Here are the first four pages of this project.

This is page 5. I figured I'd post this, because, while page 4 ends the preview at a good spot, I think page 5 makes for a better conclusion.

This is the logo I'll be using. Well, there may be some fine tuning here and there done to it in the future, but I like this general idea, so that will stick. I'll add "Multiversal Guardian" beneath the "Zatswan". I'm not sure how that will look yet:

White background:

I wanted to make something exciting and fun to look at. My favorite Green Lantern logo is the one that was used in the 80s, when Len Wein and Dave Gibbons started the title. I like it because... it is exciting and fun to look at, which a lot of logos at DC these days are not to me. I actually dislike the logos they use on Green Lantern books now, because, while competent... they're really boring, and they don't say anything outside of the text they present. The old 80s logo (which actually was based on the 70s logo, which was actually based on the 40s logo) was really clever in that it had a lantern in the middle and it was emitting rays of light and energy, which is where the text went. That type of inventiveness isn't in the GL logos these days, and hasn't been for a long while now.

I'm going with this logo unless I come up with something better. It's very similar to the ones above, but touched up some and with "Multiversal Guardian" added.

To tell you the truth, when I uploaded that cover image above, I was very tired and wanted to get some sleep before going to work, so I mickey moused a lot of things there (for example, some of the picture was cut out). Here is the real cover:

So, there you have it! A 5 page preview + cover + logo. There are a few small things I'm going to correct before I start promoting this thing for real, and doing other things with it. I guess I can tell you to be candid. The blond girl on the first page in the fourth panel... her arm is too long. The guy on the first panel of page 5 wearing blue jeans... I could do better on his arm, too, so I'll fix that. Fun little fact, he's standing next to Eddie Dombrowski from Silent Hill 2:

*

I'm really confident in this project. I think it will see success. There were times I wondered, but I'm very confident in the content, and knowing where I'm heading with it, I honestly do believe it's a whole lot better and more interesting than something like Green Lantern, which it is comparable to in many ways. I think GL had the potential to be better, but it was always blown or not realized in some way.

I also see how well someone like Alex Woolfson has done doing a comic about a team of gay heroes, which you may think would be a very hard sell.

That's one of the reasons I criticize DC sometimes. They would never be able to get something like that to work. Then their readers and defenders would say stuff like, "Well, no one wants to read stories with characters like that."

No, there actually is an audience out there looking for content like that. They just, apparently, don't read DC Comics, and you have to be smart about reaching that audience, which, apparently, DC is not.

I really dig it man. I don't look at it as something to replace GL or make it obsolete, but the art style reminds me of something like Sailor Moon mixed with Jack Kirby-esque designs. When I have more time I'll check out the site!

I've been watching a bunch of Because Science and thinking about superheroes and concepts in completely different ways lately. This kinda makes me think of something that would be on there...

Thank you! I really, really appreciate the input. I'm a big fan of both Sailor Moon (well, at least of the first saga where the characters battle Queen Beryl and the Negaverse/Dark Kingdom) and Jack Kirby!

Everything looks good. One critique though, try some different angles for the characters. Like a good overhead view once in awhile. Keep up the good work all the same!

Still looking good. I think if you got into photoshop and had more crisp colors the artwork itself would pop more. There's always a free version somewhere you can download. You can also do a lot of cooler glowing and energy effects, and could even do cooler stuff with the lettering and fonts.

Thank you. I have Photoshop, and it is used in my process. You may note the gutters (space between panels) are actually done digitally (with Photoshop). I choose to do traditional coloring of the pictures because I like the way it looks more, as I feel it has more nuance and texture, I like the process more, and the comic looks less generic.

That said, I understand people aren't as accustomed to seeing comics colored this way, so it may be strange to some.

Lettering in Photoshop, or any raster based program is a no-no for me (and a lot of other letterists. I use Adobe Illustrator for that, which is pretty standard for comic book lettering.

I redid the cover for Chapter 1. There's a chance I could use the image as a cover for my graphic novel (that's the plan, unless I think of a better idea along the way), so I wanted to do a better version:
