That's awesome! The look on the boy's face was priceless. Good for him. If I was his dad I would have been bawling like a baby as he crossed the line.

Dude is awesome. My kind of hero, the librarian kind.

It's sad to think of all these people who want to learn to read or who can't get books and then think of all the people in our culture who can read and easily get books, but who don't read more than their Facebook page or the TV menu.

^I love stories like that. I always used to seem to get along with the school janitors, but none quite stand out as much as this guy.

I thought of posting this in the Cool News thread, but after reading some of the comments about the progression of the overall character of the attacker, I felt this belongs more here instead:

Woman attacked for running Boston Marathon in 1967 ran it again, 50 years later. Katharine Switzer in 2017

Only the second number to be retired. Amazing.

Yeah, I found it interesting that the guy who tried to pull her from the race apparently became a staunch supporter of women running the marathon, once the rules were changed, and apologized to her personally (after that race, I think).

It sounds like, rather than being motivated by misogyny specifically, he was simply a race official who was rather...overzealous about enforcing the rules. Women were not allowed to run at the time that she ran, and he was upset that the rule was being flouted. He apparently also took issue with (and sometimes physical actions against) other runners that were not going through official channels, but just running along unofficially, sometimes in various costumes. He took the race very seriously, and it sounds like that sometimes led him to go overboard against people who he felt were disrespecting the race.

That is very heartwarming, and I feel like a bad person for having my second reaction (after, "That's such a cool thing to do!") being the rather snobbish, "Boy is there way too much Elmo and Barney on that rack."

10YO boy donates 3,000 comics to deployed soldiers; gets day in return he won't forget.

When I got home today, my younger sister, her boyfriend, and his daughter were over for snacks. He told me he was very impressed with my own collection (he barely saw a fraction, just what I was working through spread out on a queen-sized bed, big backlog).

This kid's got me beat by a longshot.

Dad Keeps An "Embarrassing" Promise to His Daughter

Quote:
This dad is getting lots of praise and kudos online after something he did for his daughter.

His 10-year-old asked her dad to babysit her doll named Davey for the day and find him an outfit to wear too. So dad headed to the Goodwill, strapped the doll into his cart and began his search for the perfect outfit. A sales associate was moved by his dedication to his daughter after helping him locate some clothes for the doll, and logged on to the Love What Matter's Facebook page to share the touching story. In her post, she wrote that she first noticed the man in the store because, although he was a "big dude" with "tattoos on his neck," he wandered through Goodwill alone with the doll in his cart — and wasn't the least bit embarrassed about it.

Nice job dad! Parenting win for sure!

Meet the Hero Who Took a Bullet for a Stranger!

Quote:
In the middle of a gunman’s terrifying rampage, Ian stepped up to save the life of a man he’d never met. For the first time on daytime TV, Ian and his family tell the story of that terrible night.

On February 22 of this year, Ian Grillot was with friends at Austins Bar and Grill in Olathe, Kansas. His sister Maggie says, “He saw a couple of gentlemen being harassed by a gentleman who was drunk. He was just very rude all around, spewing racial slurs.” His targets were Alok Madasani and Srinivas Kuchibhotla, two aviation engineers whom he accused of being Arab (they were actually citizens of India).

Ian asked the harasser to leave and then escorted him out of the restaurant – but about half an hour later, the man returned with a gun and opened fire in the restaurant. When Ian attempted to approach him, he was shot.

ER Physician Dr. Lee Norman explains that the bullet penetrated Ian’s hand, continued through his chest until it struck and collapsed a lung, and then lodged in his chest. “He was literally millimeters away from being dead or paralyzed.” . . .
