Default Darkstars

I'm collecting Green Lantern since a few years and stumbled on Darkstars and LEGION. Can anyone recommend these comics or should I skip them?

All depends on your taste. If you mainly read GL for space adventures and you like all kinds of space adventures, you'll probably love them. I got very little of them myself.

Yo.

the original run of Omega Men has *close* ties to the Teen Titans (and a few w/the GLC, due to the hands-off rule the Oans had regarding the Psions in the Vega system), and it works as part of the shared universe -concept; if U want to indulge in some decent Branze Age spacy stories with teeth, Id definitely recommend it.

I didnt really get into the Darkstars or LEGION, altho the last run of the latter had Tomasi incorporating story elements from his GLC-run into it, and that made for a good read.

I bought the Darkstars run for the GL connection. It's okay. If you like space stories in general it's worth reading. There were 38 issues as well as a #0 issue.

I was a fan of the Darkstars and thought it was awesome they took side characters like Donna Troy [the original Wondergirl] and John Stewart [then a GL without power] and made them members.

GL vol. 3 #74 and #75 showed 'the end' of the Darkstars for the most part and only a handful remained after that. Later on at some point leading up to Infinite Crisis they showed up in cooler suits but I forget where.

Ferrin Colos was a badass and I'd always hoped after the Darkstars ended he'd become a GLC regular. Same as Munchuk or whatever the big green guy's name was. Hell even the guy in the trenchcoat could fill the void left after Jack T. Chance was killed by Kylellax. Marvel is always trying to give their old 80's and 90's properties some love and once in awhile we see characters like Darkhawk featured in a few places. With DC it's not so much and it's a damn shame. I'd love to see the Darkstars appear in some way or be referenced.

Yo.

I think yur referring to the Planet Heist -mini, which held the FINAL mission of the DSs (as well as also being the revamp of Adam Strange); if U havent read it yet, then I *highly* recommend U do so.

I found all of them on "mycomicshop" They seem to have all the Darkstars, LEGION and Omega men. I think it is a bit sad that (as far as I know) they just dropped LEGION since I havn't heard anything about them in later comics. As for darkstars, it was fun to finally understand why John Stewart got into a wheelchair. I guess they are trying to get rid of all the "tie-ins" since they let Larfleeze kill the controllers. I personally like the idea of these comics (I havn't read them) but it seems to me that they broaden the Green Lantern series a bit. Another reason for collecting these is that they are much cheaper than the older (pre 90s) Green Lantern stories.

Yo.

about LEGION, not exactly: b4 the DC lost there minds and rebooted ALMOST everything *yet again*, they put out a book called R.E.B.E.L.S. that dealt with things in the immediately after Planet Heist and with the state of the greater universe as seen in GLC and IC.

go cheggit out.....

The only characters I cared for in LEGION and REBELS was Capt. Comet and Lobo. Omega Men are alright depending on the creative team and the roster, but it's a lot like the aforementioned titles in that there aren't many characters to root for despite ties to familiar alien races in the DCU. The last good appearance of Tigorr was when he teamed with Adam Strange and Prince Gavyn [another Starman] around the time of Rann/Thanagar War. Since the Vega System is no longer off limits to the GLC, it'd be cool if he got a ring of his own...

I still have a lot to go back and collect around the time of Infinite Crisis. I only got some of the issues of R/T War, Adam Strange, and Mystery in Space. Wasn't there another series where Capt. Comet [then rechristened simply as Comet] teamed with characters like Adam Strange, the Weird, and a Bizarro to fight Lady Styx or some other cosmic baddie? Wasn't it like Strange Adventures or something? I just remember the unofficial team was labelled the Aberrant Six...

Something like that, along with Animal Man, Starfire and Starman (Prince Gavyn). They fought some sort of demi-god cosmic type guy...actually I don't recall them fighting him much, just sort of...dealing with him? I forget. They were fun though.

Yo.

Mav's thinking of the stuff that happened in 52, and KL's thinking of Rann-Thanagar Holy War, which was the last of Starlins DC cosmic stories......

Nope, I was right... Strange Adventures...

Starlin did this series as well but I'm not sure what order they're all in. I just remember being excited DC was finally doing something with other cosmic properties... then the New52 pretty much destroyed everything they had built back up. Even though Morrison is a genius, I didn't care for what he turned Capt. Comet into in Action Comics in the New52. And Tigorr showed up in Deathstroke I think and resembled some more alien looking human rather than a tiger.

Has there ever been a real tie in with Green Lantern from these comics? In Larfleeze they quickly mention L.E.G.I.O.N. The Rann Thanagar War is also talked about in Green Lantern books. But what about the rest, are they totally disconnected. For example they don't seem to refer at all to John Stewarts and the Darkstars, just to mention one thing. It would be very cool it they made some large epic where all these different comics could come in.

The only time John Stewart's time as a Darkstar was brought up was in the Kyle era of GL in vol. 3 of that series. IIRC when Kyle first meets John is around issue#71, the same issue Kyle and Donna Troy have their first real fight when Donna walks in on Kyle painting his hot model neighbor in the nude. John goes on to tell Kyle about his time as a Lantern and joining the Darkstars. After getting crippled in GL #75, John shows up sporadically and often brings up his past in super heroics as a sort of mentor to Kyle. Donna was also a Darkstar by the time she met Kyle and the two dated for the entire time she was still a member of their group. It should be noted they continued to have adventures in both the New Titans series as well as Kyle's GL run while she was a Darkstar.

The last Legion series had Vril Dox get a Sinestro Corps ring. Other than the series we've been discussing earlier I don't think the Darkstars were touched on.

damn, I had completely forgotten about that series, and as it turns out I think THIS is wat Mav was referring to (as opposed to yurself) rather than the other adventures Kory, A.M. & Adam had in 52:

Was there a reason behind Adam Strange going back to his classic look in that?

I found a Green Lantern list over the 2nd series where they suggest that I should read the Spectre. I have never read this series. I've read a bit about the series and it doesn't seem to be all that important. What are your thoughts?

I assume you mean the Spectre series where Hal was serving as the Spectre? It isn't a bit important to what's going on in GL now. It was pretty much brushed aside as irrelevant as far back as the end of Green Lantern Rebirth (and during Rebirth it was only relevant in that it explained why Hal was the Spectre in the first place).

At this point, though, I'm fairly sure that Hal's stint as the Spectre no longer happened in current continuity.

Issues of continuity aside, if you want to read everything with Hal Jordan in it, I guess you should read that. I didn't think it was very good (though it had some decent issues along the way, IMHO), so I can't really recommend it.
